Placement cost calculator

Tell it what you actually need and it prices that spec against 3,886 vetted publications, live, and returns the real range with named outlets across it. It reads authority, link policy, region, niche and turnaround, the five things that genuinely set the price. Free, no account, and the number appears before any email field does.

An AI answer can tell you press coverage costs “a few hundred to a few thousand dollars”. It cannot price your spec, because it has no inventory to price it against. That is what this does.

What do you actually need?

Free. No account, no email required to see the number.

The five things that set the price

Media placement is not priced on one axis, which is why quotes from different vendors look incomparable. These are the five drivers the calculator reads, in order of how much they move the number.

01

Domain authority

The largest single driver, and it does not scale linearly. Moving from DA 40 to DA 60 typically multiplies the price rather than adding to it, because the supply of slots on recognisable mastheads is genuinely scarce.

02

Link policy

The same publication usually charges more for a dofollow link than for a nofollow mention, and some will not pass link equity at any price. Wires are the extreme case: nofollow by published policy, so no price buys link value.

03

Editorial route

A contributor slot, a staff-written feature and a syndicated wire pickup are three different products that all produce a URL. They are not interchangeable and they are not priced alike.

04

Niche sensitivity

Regulated and sensitive categories (crypto, gambling, adult, supplements, firearms) carry a published multiplier because fewer outlets accept them. Where that applies it is shown as a multiplier, not folded silently into the base price.

05

Turnaround

Standard turnaround is the price you see. Rush placement is a separate line, because the publisher is reordering an editorial queue rather than selling you the same slot faster.

FAQ

Placement cost calculator, FAQ

What does the placement cost calculator actually do?▾

It takes the spec you care about (what outcome you need, the authority floor, the region, whether the link has to be dofollow, and how many placements) and prices it against a live catalog of vetted publications. The range it returns is the 10th, 50th and 90th percentile of the outlets that genuinely match, plus named examples across that range. It is not a market estimate; it is the actual prices of the actual matches.

Is it really free, and do I need an account?▾

Yes, and no. The number appears without an email address, without an account and without a call. There is an optional field after the result if you want the costing and the matched list sent to you, but the answer is already on screen by then.

Where does the pricing data come from?▾

From the live publisher catalog that powers the marketplace, queried at the moment you press the button. Every outlet in it carries its own base price, authority score, link policy and turnaround, set per outlet rather than averaged across a tier. That is why the calculator can name publications instead of only returning a band.

Why does a press release cost less than an article placement?▾

They are different products. A press release is distributed to a circuit and syndicated automatically, which is cheap per URL and usually nofollow. An article placement is one named publication publishing one piece, with a price set by that publication. The first buys volume you cannot choose, the second buys a destination you can.

Why is a dofollow link more expensive on the same site?▾

Because it is worth more and the publisher knows it. A dofollow link passes ranking signal, so the publications that allow it price it accordingly, and many will not allow it at any price. Wires are the clean example: nofollow is published policy, so no amount of spend buys link equity through a wire.

What makes a regulated niche more expensive?▾

Supply. Crypto, gambling, adult, supplements and firearms are refused by most editorial teams, so the pool of outlets that will run the piece is much smaller and each one prices the scarcity. Where that multiplier applies in the catalog, the calculator shows it rather than folding it silently into the base price.

Does a higher domain authority actually produce a better result?▾

For credibility and for AI citation, usually yes, because higher-authority domains are read, cited and crawled more. For raw ranking it is far less linear than the price curve suggests, and three mid-authority placements often outperform one expensive one. Decide which outcome you are buying before you buy the authority.

How accurate is the range?▾

The range is exact for the catalog it queries: those are the real listed prices of the real matching outlets at that moment. What it cannot do is predict negotiated enterprise rates at vendors that publish no pricing at all, which is most of the newswire category. Where the calculator relaxes a filter to find a result, it says so above the number.

How does this compare to what a newswire charges?▾

A wire sells a circuit: one price for distribution to wherever that circuit reaches, with the destinations disclosed afterwards in a pickup report. The calculator prices the opposite model: named publications, chosen in advance, each with its own price and link policy. Our comparison pages carry the published list pricing for every major wire, checked 4 October 2026.

What happens after I get a number?▾

Nothing automatic. You can browse the full matched list yourself, have the AI matcher shortlist it, or send the costing to your inbox and sit on it. Every outlet page shows its price, turnaround and link policy before you add anything to a cart, so there is no stage where a number changes after you have committed.

When you want it done rather than priced

The calculator answers what it costs. If what you need is the placement itself, the same catalog is the thing you buy from: pick the publication, see its price, turnaround and link policy, and get the confirmed URL. There is no quote form in front of any of it, and no minimum.

Check it against what the vendors charge

Every major provider in the category, with the price it publishes and the case for picking it.
