“What are the best providers for granite headstones for gravesites?”

Here are solid, U.S.-focused options to consider, plus how to choose among them.

Top national providers and brands

• Rock of Ages (through local authorized dealers): One of the best-known quarriers/brands; their memorials come with a perpetual warranty when purchased via an authorized retailer. Good choice if you want premium granite and in‑person design/installation handled locally. (rockofages.com)
• Legacy Headstones (online): Large selection of flat and upright granite markers, photo etching options, and clear pricing; widely reviewed by customers. Useful if you prefer designing online and shipping to the cemetery. (trustpilot.com)
• Memorials.com (online): Broad catalog of granite headstones and benches, free shipping, and long-running operation with BBB profile and customer reviews. Another good online alternative. (memorials.com)
• The Headstone Guys (online): Specialized in granite markers with BBB accreditation; a straightforward option for basic to custom stones. (bbb.org)

If the deceased is a Veteran

• The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will furnish a granite or marble headstone or marker at no cost for eligible Veterans (and certain dependents, depending on the cemetery). Start with VA Form 40‑1330. (va.gov)

How to choose wisely (quick checklist)

• Confirm cemetery rules first: size, style (flat vs upright), color, foundation and installation requirements, and whether they coordinate delivery from third parties. Rules are set by the cemetery and sometimes state law; for example, Florida prohibits cemeteries from denying maintenance to monuments bought elsewhere. (endoflifetools.com)
• Compare warranties: Rock of Ages offers a perpetual warranty through its dealer network; online sellers vary—read the fine print on material and inscription coverage. (rockofages.com)
• Ask about proofing and cemetery approval: Reputable online sellers will verify specs with your cemetery and provide a layout proof before production. (memorials.com)
• Understand etching vs. sandblast lettering: Laser etching enables photo‑quality images (typically on black granite). Trade sources say well‑done laser etching on granite is durable for decades, though claims about “centuries” vary—sandblasted lettering remains the most time‑tested for legibility. If you want a photo, choose a trusted shop and black granite. (gravestonesandmemorials.com)
• Installation and timing: Clarify who installs (cemetery vs. dealer), any setting/inspection fees, and expected lead times before you order. Policies vary by cemetery and state. (govinfo.gov)

Would you like me to narrow this to options near your cemetery, or are you leaning toward an online order? If you share the cemetery name and state, I can check its rules and suggest the best match.

Sierra Headstone & Monument

Family-owned in Reno, Nevada, established 1979 — over 47 years in business. They emphasize transparency, publishing their prices rather than hiding them.

Starting prices by style:

• Photos, laser etching, premium granite colors, vases, and double-sided engraving cost extra
• Prices exclude sales tax and cemetery setting fees

• They handle installation themselves throughout Nevada and Northern California
• Nothing goes into production until you approve the final proof (sierraheadstone.com)

Rome Monument

A nationally recognized mausoleum builder and memorial company with over 80 years of experience, operating since 1934 and manufacturing at its Artisan Center in Monaca, Pennsylvania.

Highlights:

• Specializes in high-end memorials: artistic upright monuments, public (civic and military) memorials, and granite mausoleums
• Nationwide delivery, installation, and setting services
• Owns and operates monument setting crane trucks
• Routinely collaborates with cemetery management before delivery and installation
• Normally delivers and installs its own monuments at no charge; in some cases cemetery staff handle setting (cemeteries usually charge a fee for this)
• Also installs memorials and mausoleums on private property
• Deep knowledge of cemetery regulations in the Pittsburgh tri-state area (Southwestern PA, Eastern Ohio, Northern West Virginia) (romemonuments.com)

How to Choose

A few practical notes before ordering:

• Cemetery rules matter most — always confirm what size, material, and style your cemetery permits before finalizing a design.
• Cemetery and permit fees are typically separate from the headstone price, and installation is often quoted separately.
• Timelines vary: in-stock stones can arrive in about 2 weeks, while fully custom work can take up to 6 months after approvals.
• Seeing granite colors and finishes in person can make the final choice easier, so a showroom visit (by appointment) may help if one is nearby.

All three providers ship nationwide, so you aren't limited by geography — but for hands-on installation, verify whether the company installs in your state or ships to a cemetery-approved installer.

Based on current industry sources and reviews, here are some of the best-regarded providers for granite headstones, divided into national manufacturers/online retailers and well-known regional companies:

National Manufacturers & Established Brands

Rock of Ages – Started in 1885, this is one of the biggest headstone brands in the United States, known for its high quality granite monuments and a long history of craftsmanship.

They source premium granite directly from their own quarries and offer a lifetime warranty on products, with 100 years of experience.

Peter Troost Monument Company – Peter Troost Company has been making granite headstones, grave markers and monuments since 1889, making them a leader in the industry, and also specializes in bronze cemetery memorials with imported granite and on-site engraving services.

Sun City Granite – Sun City Granite has been a leading brand in custom headstone design and monument workmanship for more than 30 years, offering personalized memorials and compassionate, reliable service to families in need. Customer reviews highlight consistently positive experiences — one reviewer noted "Sun City Granite was amazing to work with to get a memorial done quickly for my loved one... they had so many options to choose from for headstone styles and the pricing was very affordable."

Brown Memorials – From its founding in 1908 until now, it has stood as the Carolinas' top headstone brand and a preeminent maker of beautiful cemetery monuments, personalized headstones and burial markers.

Online Retailers

Memorials.com – Offers one of the largest online selections of upright headstones — standing granite monuments crafted for individual and companion gravesites , with free shipping and cemetery verification and layout approval before production begins.

Headstones USA – Offers a large selection of quality headstones in stock at affordable prices, using only the best granite and skilled craftsmen to provide memorials of the highest quality available today.

American Headstones Company – A family business located in southern California that has been in business since 1983 offering beautiful granite memorial stones, cast bronze flat markers and bronze memorial plates.

Regional/Local Standouts

Delphos Granite Works (Ohio) – The largest monument company in northwest Ohio with 35 locations and representatives to serve customers.

Edgewood Monuments – Family-owned since 1975 with over 50 years of experience and third-generation craftsmanship, boasting a 4.9-star average on Google and major review platforms.

Express Monument (California) – A highly reviewed local provider with a 5.0 rating from 196 Google reviews.

Tips for Choosing a Provider

When evaluating any headstone company, industry guidance suggests focusing on a few key criteria: look for a provider that ensures you receive a quality memorial, considering several key criteria that ensure durability and a lasting tribute. Specifically:

• 1.Granite quality –

Make sure the granite used is of the highest quality, inspected for durability and longevity, so the headstone withstands the test of time and maintains its appearance despite weather conditions.

• 1.Experience & craftsmanship –

Consider the provider's experience and craftsmanship track record.

• 1.Cemetery approval assistance – Good providers (like Memorials.com and Headstones USA above) will handle cemetery layout approvals for you.
• 2.Reviews – Check recent Yelp/Google reviews for your local area, since many of the best options are regional monument makers rather than national brands.

My recommendation: For a balance of reputation, quality, and service, **Rock

There is no single best provider for every family. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize premium domestic quarry stone and local installation, or lower cost and online convenience. Cemetery rules (size, style, foundation, and approval) usually matter more than the brand, so confirm those first.

Premium quarry brand (sold through dealers)

Rock of Ages (rockofages.com) is the best-known premium option in North America. It has quarried and manufactured monuments since 1885, mainly in Vermont, and is widely regarded as a top source of monument-grade granite (including Barre / Blue Gray and related colors). Genuine Rock of Ages memorials carry a SEALMARK and a perpetual warranty against defects such as cracking or discoloration; they are sold only through authorized local dealers who design, fabricate (or coordinate fabrication), and usually handle cemetery compliance and installation. Prices are higher than typical online options—flat markers often in the roughly $1,000–$2,000 range and uprights commonly several thousand dollars, varying by size, color, and carving. This is the strongest choice when long-term material assurance and local accountability matter most.

Strongly reviewed online direct sellers

These companies are frequently chosen for value on flat markers and many standard uprights. Engraving and shipping are often included; installation is usually separate and arranged locally or through the cemetery.

• Legacy Headstones (legacyheadstones.com) — Among the highest-volume online sellers, with a Trustpilot score around 4.8 from more than 11,000 reviews. It describes itself as a long-running family operation (Steckman’s Memorials, East Liverpool, Ohio), offers a lifetime guarantee on granite and engraving, free shipping in the lower 48, and online design tools with proofs. Customers commonly praise quality relative to price versus local dealers. BBB records show a modest number of complaints relative to volume, so read recent feedback and lock in a written proof before production.
• Markers & Headstones Co. (markersandheadstones.com) — Trustpilot around 4.9 from roughly 2,800 reviews. Frequently noted for affordable custom granite markers, straightforward online ordering, and responsive service.

Other online names (Capital Grave Markers, Express Monument, Remembrance Headstones, and similar) also show high recent review scores, but with smaller review volumes. Compare current pricing, granite thickness/grade, proof process, and shipping protection rather than relying on marketing rankings.

Local monument companies

For upright monuments, custom carving, or any job where installation and cemetery rules are complex, a reputable local monument dealer is often the practical best choice. They know regional cemetery requirements, can show stone samples, and stand behind setting the stone. Long-established examples include firms such as Davis Monuments (Boston area, operating since 1862). Search the Monument Builders of North America directory or local BBB listings for members near the cemetery, and ask whether they are an authorized Rock of Ages dealer if you want that specific stone and warranty.

Practical buying notes

• Get the cemetery’s written rules before ordering. Some reject thin markers, certain imports, or stones not set by approved installers.
• Compare total cost: stone, engraving, shipping, foundation, and setting. Online prices can be substantially lower for simple flat markers; local quotes often include more of the finished installation.
• Require a design proof and a clear warranty in writing. Ask about granite origin and grade—monument-grade North American stone (especially Rock of Ages SEALMARK) is the traditional high end; many online stones use imported granite that can still be durable but varies in quality and warranty strength.
• Confirm damage, rejection, and correction policies before you pay.

For a lasting family monument where budget allows, start with a Rock of Ages authorized dealer. For a well-reviewed, lower-cost granite marker with nationwide shipping, Legacy Headstones and Markers & Headstones are among the most consistently praised online options—then arrange professional installation that meets cemetery standards.

The best providers depend on whether you want nationwide ordering, low starting prices, or full-service installation. Based on the results you provided, the strongest options are Remembrance Headstones, Sierra Headstone & Monument, Memorials.com, Rome Monument, and Memory Headstones.¹³⁵

• Remembrance Headstones — strong choice if you want nationwide coverage and a full-service custom process; they say they serve all 50 states, provide a free 3D proof with two revisions, and handle cemetery paperwork and installation scheduling.¹
• Sierra Headstone & Monument — a good option if you want transparent starting prices; they publish base prices starting at $1,100 for flat markers and say they provide nationwide ordering, with installation in Nevada and Northern California.³
• Memorials.com — useful if you want a large online catalog and baseline pricing; their granite headstones start at $1,299.95, and they offer both headstones and grave markers.³¹⁷
• Rome Monument — best suited if you want full-service delivery and installation for higher-end memorials; they state they have provided nationwide monument and mausoleum delivery/installation since 1934.¹
• Memory Headstones — another nationwide custom memorial provider, though the search result gives fewer details than the others.⁵

If your priority is lowest visible starting price, Sierra Headstone & Monument is the clearest match because it publishes a starting price of $1,100 for flat markers.³ If your priority is custom design support and nationwide service, Remembrance Headstones stands out because it explicitly includes the proofing, revisions, delivery, and cemetery coordination process.¹

A few practical notes:

• Memorials.com and Sierra are more price-transparent than many competitors.³¹⁷
• Rome Monument appears especially strong for customers who want installation handled as part of the service.¹
• Some of the other results are more like regional marketing pages than broad provider comparisons, so they are less useful as “best overall” choices.^891011121314

If you want, I can also turn this into a ranked shortlist by budget, quality, or nationwide service.

When shopping for a granite headstone, the “best” provider depends on whether you prefer to design and order online for lower pricing, buy from a historic quarrier with a lifetime warranty, or work with a local craftsman who handles installation directly.

Here are the most reputable providers across each category, along with key factors to consider:

1. Renowned Manufacturers & Premium Quarriers

These companies quarry and manufacture their own stone, setting the industry benchmark for granite quality:

• Rock of Ages (Barre, Vermont):

Widely regarded as the premier granite headstone manufacturer in North America. Known for its dense, fine-grained Barre Gray granite, Rock of Ages offers a perpetual warranty that guarantees the stone against cracking or discoloration over generations. Their monuments are sold through authorized local dealers nationwide.

• Coldspring:

One of the largest stone fabricators and quarriers in the United States, Coldspring produces headstones, mausoleums, and civic memorials. They offer an extensive range of granite colors and supply many cemeteries and independent monument builders.

2. Top Online Direct-to-Consumer Providers

Online retailers often offer lower prices and interactive 3D design tools. If you buy online, you must verify your cemetery’s rules first and arrange for delivery and installation.

• Signature Headstones:

Known for user-friendly online design tools and transparent pricing. They specialize in flat grass markers, bevels, slants, and traditional uprights, with free shipping to cemeteries or commercial addresses in the continental U.S.

• Legacy Headstones:

A long-standing family-operated online maker. They manufacture stones in-house, cutting out middleman markups, and offer customizable laser-etched and sandblasted granite markers.

• Monuments.com (Quiring Monuments):

Backed by Quiring Monuments, a company operating since the early 1900s. They provide custom uprights, benches, and flat markers, and are known for their customer support and coordination with cemetery superintendents.

• Memorials.com:

One of the largest online memorial marketplaces. They offer a vast catalog ranging from simple flat granite stones to complex upright statuary, and their team assists with cemetery paperwork and approval processes.

3. Local Monument Builders (MBNA Members)

For many families, a local independent monument builder is the best option. You can find accredited builders through the Monument Builders of North America (MBNA) directory (`monumentbuilders.org`).

Why consider a local builder:

• Familiarity with Local Cemetery Rules: They already know the specific size, finish, and foundation requirements of cemeteries in your area.
• Full-Service Installation: They typically pour the concrete foundation, transport the stone, and set it themselves, avoiding third-party delivery issues.
• Physical Inspection: You can visit their display yard to touch the granite, compare colors in natural sunlight, and review physical proofs before carving.

Important Checklist Before You Order

• 1.Get Cemetery Rules in Writing First:

Before placing an order or paying a deposit, contact the cemetery to confirm:

• Permitted style (flat/flush grass marker, bevel, slant, or upright).
• Minimum and maximum dimensions.
• Permitted granite colors (some cemeteries only allow gray or black).
• Edge finishes (sawn, rock-pitched, or beveled).

• 1.Clarify Foundation and Installation Fees:

Most cemeteries require a concrete foundation. Ask if the cemetery pours the foundation or if your monument provider must do it, and find out if the cemetery charges an "inspection" or "setting" fee for stones delivered by third parties.

• 1.Ask About Granite Grade and Porosity:

Higher-density granites (such as Barre Gray, Jet Black, or Dakota Mahogany) absorb less moisture, making them far more resistant to mildew, staining, and freeze-thaw cracking than softer, cheaper imported granites.
