Wikipedia notability requirements

To qualify for a Wikipedia page you need significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of you. “Significant” means the source covers you in detail, not a passing mention. “Independent” means you did not produce it, so press releases, your own website, and sponsored articles do not count. “Reliable” means outlets with editorial oversight. You typically need several such sources, at least one with national or international reach.

What counts, and what does not

Counts

  • In-depth coverage in a major newspaper or magazine where a journalist chose to write about you
  • A book or scholarly work that discusses the subject in detail
  • Independent investigative journalism or documentary coverage
  • Multiple substantial, independent secondary sources (not one, several)
  • At least one source with regional, national, or international reach

Does not count

  • Press releases, sponsored articles, or "churnalism" based on your own materials
  • Your own website, social media, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, or IMDb listing
  • Routine announcements: funding rounds, hires, product launches, acquisitions
  • Social-media follower counts or Google hit counts
  • Local-only coverage with no wider reach
  • Being related to, or working with, someone who is already notable

Companies are held to a higher bar

For organizations, Wikipedia explicitly discounts routine business news: funding rounds, hires, product launches, acquisitions, and trade-press coverage. It wants in-depth, independent journalism or analysis. That is why most early-stage companies do not qualify yet, and why honest assessment matters more than salesmanship. See Wikipedia’s notability guideline for organizations.

FAQ

Notability requirements, FAQ

What makes you notable enough for a Wikipedia page?

Wikipedia notability means significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of you. In plain terms: several substantial articles where journalists or authors chose to write about you, not press releases, your own site, or routine announcements. If that coverage does not exist yet, no agency can ethically create a lasting page. We assess this honestly first.

Does my business qualify for a Wikipedia page?

Many do not yet, and that is the honest truth most agencies will not tell you. Companies need significant independent coverage beyond funding announcements, product launches, and trade press. Essentras runs a free notability pre-assessment and tells you upfront whether you qualify, before you spend anything.

Why do Wikipedia pages get rejected or deleted?

The top reasons are lack of notability (no independent secondary sources), promotional tone, sources that are press releases or company pages, and undisclosed paid editing. A page can also be deleted years later if someone challenges its notability. Building on genuine independent coverage from the start is the only durable approach.

How long does it take to get a Wikipedia page approved?

After a well-sourced draft is submitted through Articles for Creation, volunteer review can take anywhere from days to a few months, depending on the backlog. No one can pay to expedite the volunteer queue. A strong, properly sourced draft is reviewed faster than a weak one.

Can you guarantee my Wikipedia page will be approved?

No, and anyone who guarantees a Wikipedia page is misleading you. Volunteers, not the agency, decide whether an article meets the rules, and pages can be deleted later if notability is challenged. What we can promise is honest assessment, properly sourced neutral content, full disclosure, and a full money-back guarantee: if we do not get your page published and live on Wikipedia, you get every dollar back.
