What is Domain Rating (DR)?

Domain Rating is Ahrefs’ 0 to 100 measure of how strong a website’s backlink profile is. It counts the unique domains that link to a site and weighs each by its own strength, on a logarithmic scale: going from DR 20 to 30 takes far less than going from DR 70 to 80.

DR measures links only. It doesn’t look at traffic, content or spam. That’s why a DR 60 site can still be a link network, and why this checker puts its Open PageRank, which filters link networks out, right next to it and warns you when the two don’t match.

What is a good DR?

Good is relative to your competitors. Rough guide: DR 0 to 19 is a new or small site, 20 to 39 an established small business, 40 to 59 a strong niche brand, 60 to 79 a national brand or major publication, 80+ the global elite.

How to raise your DR

DR only moves when stronger domains link to you. The shortest path is editorial links from publications with a much higher DR than yours. In our marketplace every outlet shows its verified DR and price before you order.

DA vs DR vs Authority Score: what each one measures

All of them try to answer the same question: how strong is this site’s backlink profile? They crawl the web separately and use different math, so the same site can score 10 or 20 points apart. Here is what each one measures.

  • Domain Authority (DA)

    Moz · 1 to 100

How likely a domain is to rank, predicted by a machine-learning model trained on Google results and Moz’s link index.

  • Domain Rating (DR)

    Ahrefs · 0 to 100

The strength of a domain’s backlink profile: how many unique domains link to it, and how strong those domains are.

  • Authority Score (AS)

    Semrush · 0 to 100

Link power, organic traffic and spam signals combined into one number.

  • Open PageRank

Keywords Everywhere (Common Crawl data) · 0 to 10

Classic PageRank computed on the open Common Crawl link graph.

  • Essentras Authority

    Essentras · 0 to 100

Our blend of Domain Rating, the Common Crawl link graph and authority-weighted referring domains, with a confidence level that tells you how much evidence there was.

None of these is a Google ranking factor; Google has said so repeatedly. They’re useful because they correlate with rankings and let you compare sites in seconds. Compare like with like: a DA against a DA, never a DA against a DR.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a Domain Rating (DR) checker?▾

A tool that shows a website’s Domain Rating, a 0 to 100 score for backlink strength. Ours also shows Open PageRank, the domain’s rank in the Common Crawl link graph, its referring domains and risk flags, so you can judge a site on more than one number.

Is this DR checker free?▾

Yes. Single checks and bulk checks of up to 50 domains are free, with no login and no captcha.

Is the DR shown the same as on Ahrefs?▾

Yes, wherever it is credited Domain Rating by Ahrefs: those figures come straight from Ahrefs’ official Domain Rating API, so they match what Ahrefs shows, give or take their update timing. For outlets in our marketplace without a live figure, we show the DR from their listing and say so.

What is the difference between DR and UR?▾

DR (Domain Rating) measures the whole domain’s backlink profile. UR (URL Rating) measures a single page. A strong domain can host weak pages and the other way around.

Does a higher DR mean higher Google rankings?▾

Not directly. Google doesn’t use DR. But DR tracks links from trusted sites, which Google does use, so higher DR sites tend to rank more easily.

How long does it take to increase DR?▾

It moves as Ahrefs discovers new linking domains, usually within weeks of new links going live. A few links from much stronger publications move it fastest.
