Rules verified, availability check
An adjective plus a noun. Nothing personal in it.
Instagram rules applied: up to 30 characters; letters, numbers, periods and underscores; no period at the start or end, and never 2 periods in a row.
Availability comes from Instagram itself, one name at a time. Anything already verified shows its verdict below; for the rest, click check this one live on the name you want. We never guess, and we never mass-query Instagram on your behalf.

Still not the one? The short, clean handle you actually want is almost certainly held by an account that stopped posting years ago.
We acquire dormant and premium handles through Meta’s official channels.

Username ideas by style
A sample batch for each style, straight from the generator’s defaults. They are ideas, not verified handles: click one to check it on Instagram, or use the generator above to tune them.
Aesthetic username ideas
Soft 2-word blends: a mood word plus a noun.
Cute username ideas
Sweet, playful words: food, small animals and tiny things.
Short username ideas
Coined and real words of 3 to 6 letters.
Professional username ideas
Built on your name for a personal brand. Type your name first. Built on the example word “alex”.
Gaming username ideas
Gamertag style: bold words, with numbers if you allow them.
Business username ideas
Brandable names with standard add-ons such as hq, co or shop. Built on the example word “kiln”.
OG-style username ideas
Single real words with no numbers or separators. Usually taken, always worth a check.
Random username ideas
An adjective plus a noun. Nothing personal in it.
How to choose a good username: 5 tests
Run every name on your shortlist through these before you claim it anywhere.
- 01
Memorable
Say it out loud once. If a friend can type it from memory, it passes. 2 short words beat 1 long phrase, real words beat random letters, and numbers only help when they mean something to your audience.
- 02
Safe
Keep personal data out of it: no full name with a birth year, no city, school, employer or street, and nothing that matches your email address or the username you sign in with elsewhere. For accounts you want kept separate, use a random name, and a different one on each site.
- 03
Brandable
If it could grow into a business, check that it reads well as a logo and a web address, carries no meaning you would regret in another language, and does not lean on someone else’s trademark.
- 04
Available everywhere you need it
Check every platform you plan to use before you commit to any of them. If the exact name is taken on one, apply the same modifier everywhere (the, get, hq, studio) instead of a different workaround on each site.
- 05
Future-proof
Avoid ages, years, trends and anything tied to a niche you might outgrow. A good username still fits in 5 years.
Username formulas that work
Most good usernames follow a pattern from this table. The generator uses all of them, so pick the style that matches.
| Formula | Examples | Best for | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mood word + noun | velvetgrove, duskarchive | Aesthetic and creator accounts | Aesthetic |
| Name + what you do | alexwrites, alex.studio | Personal brands and freelancers | Professional |
| Prefix + name | itsalex, helloalex | When the plain name is taken | Professional |
| Brand + add-on | kilnhq, getkiln | Shops, studios and startups | Business |
| Sweet pair | honeybun, mochibear | Cute, fan and Snapchat accounts | Cute |
| Bold word + edge word | frostfang, riftbolt | Gamertags | Gaming |
| Coined word | valun, borum | Brands that want the same name on a domain | Short |
| Adjective + animal or object | quietotter, cozyrocket | Random, private accounts | Random |
| Single real word | ember, harbor | OG-style: rare and almost always taken | OG-style |
Examples show the pattern only. Check any name before you use it.
Username rules by platform
Only rules we have verified are stated as rules. Where we have not yet checked a platform’s current limits against its own help pages, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Platform | Length | Characters | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. No period at the start or end, and never 2 periods in a row. | Verified | |
| TikTok | Check TikTok’s current rules | Check TikTok’s current rules | Not verified yet |
| X | Check X’s current rules | Check X’s current rules | Not verified yet |
| YouTube handle | Check YouTube’s current rules | Check YouTube’s current rules | Not verified yet |
| Snapchat | Check Snapchat’s current rules | Check Snapchat’s current rules | Not verified yet |
| Games and consoles | Set by each game | Set by each game | Varies |
| Business (every platform) | Strictest platform you use | Strictest platform you use | Depends on your platforms |

Random username generator: when random is the safer choice
Random mode joins an adjective and a noun (quietotter, cozyrocket), with numbers only if you switch them on. Nothing in it comes from you, so the name says nothing about your real name, age or location.
Use it for gaming, forums, marketplaces, test accounts and anything you want kept apart from your public profile. Pick a different random name for each site if you do not want the accounts linked by username.
A random username is not a security control. Protect every account with a unique password, ideally from a password manager, and turn on 2-factor authentication.
Generate random usernamesHow the rarity score works
Every name gets a score from 0 to 100. It rates the shape of a name, not whether it is free: rarer shapes are scarcer, which also means they are more often taken. Use the score to judge quality and the check to judge availability.
| Factor | Points | How it is scored |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 40 | 40 points at 3 characters or fewer, 4 fewer for each extra character, so 13 characters or more score 0. |
| Clean characters | 25 | 25 for letters only, 12 with 1 period or underscore, 6 with numbers, 0 with numbers and separators together or 2 or more separators. |
| Readability | 20 | 20 with no issues, 10 with 1, 0 with 2 or more. Issues: no vowel, 4 or more consonants in a row, the same character 3 times in a row, look-alike characters (0, 1 or vv). |
| Meaning | 15 | 15 for a single real word, 10 for a name made of 2 or more real words, 5 for a word with an add-on such as its, hq or studio (or a name that contains a real word), 0 for a coined string. |
| Tier | Score | Typical names |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-rare | 92 to 100 | Real words of 5 letters or fewer. On Instagram, almost all are taken. |
| Rare | 80 to 91 | Coined names of 3 or 4 letters and real words of 6 to 8 letters. |
| Strong | 60 to 79 | Coined names of 5 or 6 letters, clean blends of up to 11 characters, and short names with a number or an add-on. |
| Standard | 40 to 59 | Clean blends of 12 characters or more, and names with a period, underscore or number. |
| Common | 0 to 39 | Long names that mix numbers and separators, or that are hard to read. |
Example: lumen scores 92 (Length 32, Clean 25, Readability 20, Meaning 15). velvet.grove scores 46 (Length 4, Clean 12, Readability 20, Meaning 10).
Real words come from the curated word lists the generator uses, plus any word you type. The formula is the same on every platform. For Instagram handles, the free availability checker adds an open-market value range from our price index.
Is it available? What we can and cannot check
Availability is the hard part, and most generators skip it. This is exactly what this one does, platform by platform.
| Platform | What the generator does | Where the verdict comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Shows the verdicts we already hold with the time of each check, and runs a live check on any name you click. | Instagram’s own profile lookup | |
| TikTok, X, YouTube, Snapchat | Applies your length and character settings and links each name to the platform so you can look it up yourself. | You, on the platform |
| Games and consoles | Applies your settings. Each game checks names on its own sign-up or rename screen. | The game’s own name check |
| Business | Applies your settings and links every name to the free Instagram check. | Instagram, then each other platform you use |
Instagram allows only a small number of anonymous lookups before it blocks the requester, so we never check a whole batch at once and we never guess. A name that looks free can still be refused at signup if it is reserved, recently released or tied to a deactivated account.
Instagram username availability checkerWant a rare or OG handle instead?
Short real words and 3 or 4 letter handles are the ultra-rare tier, and on Instagram almost all of them were registered years ago. The rare usernames guide explains what exists and what it trades for. When the handle you want is held by an account that looks abandoned, our acquisition service pursues it through Meta’s official channels, with no guarantee of the outcome.
FAQ
Username generator FAQ
Is this username generator free?▾
Yes. There is no sign-up and no payment. Names for TikTok, X, YouTube, Snapchat, games and brands are generated in your browser. Instagram names also pass through our server so we can attach the availability verdicts we already hold, and that step is rate-limited per visitor to keep the check working for everyone.
Does the generator check if a username is available?▾
On Instagram, yes: names we have already checked show their verdict and the time of the check, and any other name is 1 click from a live check against Instagram’s own profile lookup. For TikTok, X, YouTube, Snapchat and games we have no verified way to check, so each name links to the platform for you to look it up. We never show a verdict we did not get.
Why do some names say “Not checked”?▾
Instagram allows only a small number of anonymous lookups before it blocks the requester, so the generator never checks a whole batch at once. It shows the verdicts we already hold and leaves the rest marked not checked until you click the one you want.
Can a username that looks free still be refused?▾
Yes. A name with no account on it can still be reserved by the platform, recently released or tied to a deactivated account. Treat “looks free” as a strong lead and confirm at signup straight away.
How long can a username be?▾
On Instagram, 1 to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, periods and underscores, with no period at the start or end and never 2 periods in a row (checked 14 Oct 2026). We have not yet verified the current limits for TikTok, X, YouTube or Snapchat against their own help pages, so check each platform before you commit.
Should I use the same username on every platform?▾
For a brand or a creator, yes: a single name is easier to find, easier to say and harder to impersonate. If the exact name is taken somewhere, add the same modifier everywhere (a prefix such as the or get, or an add-on such as hq or studio) rather than a different workaround on each site.
What makes a username rare?▾
Length, clean characters and meaning. Short real words with no numbers or separators are the scarcest shape, which is why our rarity score gives length the most weight (up to 40 of 100 points). On Instagram, almost every short real word was registered years ago; the rare usernames guide covers what exists and what it trades for.
What if the username I want is taken?▾
Try the closest variants first: add a prefix or an add-on, swap the word order, or add a period or underscore where the platform allows it. On Instagram, a taken handle held by an account that looks abandoned can sometimes be pursued through Meta’s official channels: the free checker shows the signals, and our acquisition service handles the process, with no guarantee of the outcome.
Can you buy an Instagram username?▾
Not directly on Instagram, Meta’s Terms of Use prohibit buying, selling, or transferring any aspect of an account, including the username. The compliant route is to acquire the handle through Meta’s official channels (a trademark or impersonation report, or a negotiated, documented release from the current holder), which is exactly what Essentras manages for you.
Are random usernames better for privacy?▾
They help. A random name says nothing about your real name, age or location, and a different one on each site stops accounts being linked by username. It does not protect the account itself: use a unique password for every site and turn on 2-factor authentication.
Can I save or share my list?▾
Yes. Star any name to add it to your shortlist, which is saved in this browser only. From there you can copy the list, download it as a text file or copy a link that opens the same list on another device. The link to your settings recreates the exact batch you are looking at.
Can I use a generated name for a business?▾
Yes, the names are free to use. Before you build a brand on one, search the trademark register in the countries you sell in: a name that is free on a platform can still conflict with a registered trademark.
