Switching from Semrush to Essentras

Thinking about moving off Semrush? Here is exactly what the move involves, what carries over, and what does not.

Essentras Editorial Team/Reviewed 4 Oct 2026/63 vendor pricing pages checked/How we compared

Yes, easily. Semrush only reads and displays your rankings, backlinks and AI-answer presence, it never created them, so none of that disappears when you cancel. There is no data migration and no integration to unwind. The real constraint is billing: monthly plans end at the next renewal, annual plans are prepaid and non-refundable past 7 days.

Talk through your move

No obligation, and no pitch until you have seen what the replacement actually costs.

Why companies move off Semrush

These are the reasons buyers give, not reasons we would like them to have. Semrush is a good fit for a specific case, stated further down.

Billing complaints dominate reviews

Semrush rates 4.5/5 on G2 and 4.6/5 on Capterra, but 1.7/5 on Trustpilot across 1,407 reviews, driven mostly by unexpected renewal charges and refund requests declined under the strict 7-day, annual-only policy.

Users call it expensive

Hundreds of G2 reviews tag Semrush as expensive or high priced. Capterra's own sub-scores rank Value for Money lowest of every dimension it measures, at 4.2/5, with Ease of Use close behind at 4.3/5.

Extra seats add up

Every plan ships with 1 seat. Each extra person costs $45 to $100 a month depending on tier, so a team's real cost is hard to predict at signup, a pattern buyer comparisons cite directly.

Tiers gate real features

AI prompt tracking itself starts at Starter, $199 a month. Historical data and content optimisation stay locked until Pro+, $299 a month. Reviewers describe the tier ladder as a forced upgrade path, not a feature choice.

Enterprise pricing stays hidden

The tier needed for custom-scale prompt tracking, multi-brand monitoring and SSO, Semrush for Enterprise, carries no published price. A buyer cannot compare total cost without booking a sales demo first.

The five phases of moving off Semrush

Leaving Semrush itself is fast: cancel in account billing and a monthly plan ends at the next renewal, an annual plan runs out its prepaid term. What takes longer is the AI-visibility and search work Semrush only measured, and that depends on the work you choose next, not on anything Semrush controls.

  1. 1

    Check your billing cycle

    Day 1

Open Semrush's account billing page. Confirm whether you are on monthly billing, which carries no commitment and ends at the next renewal once cancelled, or a prepaid annual plan, which is non-refundable past a 7-day window. This one fact sets your real timeline, not anything technical.

  2. 2

Pull your reports before you cancel

    Day 1 to 2

Export any keyword, backlink or AI-prompt tracking reports you want to keep. These are your only record of what the dashboard showed, since the rankings and AI-answer presence it was reading live on the public web, not inside Semrush.

  3. 3

    Check the 7-day refund window

    Within 7 days

If you bought an annual plan directly by card within the last 7 days, the one-off money-back guarantee still applies, use it now. Past that window, cancelling stops the next renewal but refunds nothing already paid, and Enterprise accounts run under their own negotiated contract instead.

  4. 4

    Start the replacement work now

    Week 1

There is no data migration and no integration to rebuild, so nothing technical is stopping you from starting elsewhere immediately. Run the new work in parallel with whatever Semrush time is already paid for. Waiting for the subscription to lapse only delays progress on the work itself.

  5. 5

    Let the subscription lapse

    Through to renewal

Monthly plans stop at the next billing date once cancelled. Annual plans run out their prepaid term, since nothing is refunded past the 7-day window. Either way, your actual rankings, backlinks and AI-answer presence carry on exactly as before, because Semrush only ever displayed them.

What you keep, and what you do not

Carries over

  • Your actual rankings, backlinks and AI-answer presence. Semrush reads and displays public signals, it does not create or own them.
  • Any reports, keyword lists or prompt-tracking exports you pull before you cancel.
  • Decisions already acted on from what Semrush showed you, a rewritten page, a fixed technical issue, a placement bought elsewhere. That work lives on its own domain, not inside Semrush's dashboard.

Does not carry over

  • Daily-tracked history across the 50 to 200 prompts your tier covered, gone once access ends unless exported first.
  • The single dashboard view across rankings, backlinks, site audits and AI-prompt tracking in one login.
  • Every seat on the account. Each additional login, at $45 to $100 a month, ends when the subscription does.
  • Any prepaid annual months left on the term. Past the 7-day window, these are not refunded, only left unused.

Contract note. Monthly billing is available at full list price with no term commitment. Annual billing is prepaid upfront for ~16-18% off. A one-time 7-day money-back guarantee applies only to an initial purchase of a 12-month+ annual plan (or an add-on) bought directly via credit card on semrush.com; outside that window, cancelling stops the next renewal but does not refund prepaid or unused fees. Enterprise customers operate under a separately negotiated Order Form / Master Subscription Agreement whose own terms override the standard policy. (Source: semrush.com/company/legal/refund-policy/)

Best forMarketing teams and agencies that already have in-house execution capacity and want one dashboard for traditional SEO plus baseline AI-answer-visibility tracking across many sites or clients.Teams that already know where they are missing from AI answers and want the placements, Wikipedia and Knowledge Panel work done rather than charted.

When Semrush is the better buy

Semrush genuinely wins for a team that already has in-house SEO, content, or PR capacity and just needs one dashboard to track rankings, backlinks, technical site health, competitor moves, and AI-prompt visibility together, especially at scale (up to 40 sites, 5,000 keywords/day, 200 prompts/day on Advanced, or custom volume on Enterprise), with API access for building custom reporting on top. Agencies managing many client sites, or any in-house team that wants ongoing self-serve monitoring across traditional and AI search rather than an outsourced placement engagement, are honestly better served by Semrush's breadth and seat-based access model than by a service like Essentras.

Measured, not asserted

The numbers behind this page

Every comparison on this site rests on two things we recompute rather than claim: the live catalog of what we actually sell, and a running study of what answer engines actually say. Both are linked below so you can check them.

Corpus figures recomputed 5 October 2026. Catalog figures are live.

How we compared

Contract and pricing details were read off Semrush's own published terms and pricing pages on 4 October 2026. Where a term is not published, this page says so instead of describing one.

  • 01Is the price published on the vendor's own pricing page today, or does learning it require a demo call? Profound, and the Enterprise tier of almost every other vendor here, is quote-only.
  • 02How many AI engines are covered on the cheapest tier you can actually buy, and what the rest cost as add-ons. Peec caps self-serve at 3 of 6 models; Otterly's base tiers cover 4 and charge separately for Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude.
  • 03How many prompts or credits the plan includes per period, what an extra block costs, and how many user seats are included before per-seat fees apply. Semrush and Ahrefs ship one seat and charge $40 to $100/mo for each additional user.
  • 04Exit terms in writing: monthly cancellation versus a prepaid annual term, the notice window before auto-renewal, and whether unused time is refunded. Peec, Otterly, Writesonic and HubSpot all state that prepaid fees are not refunded.
  • 05Whether the product changes anything outside your own domain, or only reports on it. Measurement tells you a competitor was cited instead; it does not place the article, build the entity, or fix the review profile that caused it.

Deliberately excluded. Anything a sales representative said on a call, and anything reported in a single review without a document behind it.

Essentras sells services in this category, so this page is not a neutral review. Every competitor figure is published list pricing you can check on the vendor's own site, and the case for choosing a competitor over us is stated on every entry rather than left out.

FAQ

Switching from Semrush, FAQ

Will cancelling Semrush remove our name from search results or AI answers?▾

No. Semrush does not create your rankings, backlinks or AI-answer presence, it reads and displays public signals that already exist independently of the subscription. Cancelling removes your dashboard view of that data. It does not touch the web pages, backlinks or model inputs that produced it in the first place.

Do we lose our tracked history when we cancel?▾

Likely, once access ends. The record does not specify how long reports stay available after cancellation, so the safe approach is to export any keyword, backlink or AI-prompt tracking reports you want to keep before you cancel, not after.

Can we get a refund if we are mid-term on an annual plan?▾

Only within a one-off 7-day window on an initial 12-month-plus annual purchase paid by card directly on semrush.com. Outside that window, cancelling stops the next renewal but does not refund prepaid or unused months. Enterprise customers operate under a separately negotiated Order Form instead of this standard policy.

Is there a contract notice period, like 30 or 60 days?▾

Semrush's published policy does not describe a notice period in that sense. Monthly billing carries no commitment at all, cancel any time and it ends at the next renewal. Annual billing is prepaid upfront, so the practical constraint is simply however much of that prepaid term is left, not a separate notice clause.

Do we need a technical migration or integration rebuild to leave?▾

No. Semrush is a monitoring dashboard that reads your public data, it is not infrastructure wired into your site or stack. There is no data migration and no integration to rebuild when you cancel. The only real constraint is the billing cycle you are on, not any technical dependency.

Should we wait until our Semrush term ends before starting elsewhere?▾

No. Since there is no migration or integration to untangle, the practical move is to start new work in parallel while whatever Semrush time is already paid for runs down on its own. Waiting only delays progress on the underlying search and AI-visibility work itself, the thing that actually matters.

If we still need ongoing rank tracking and competitor monitoring across many sites, does something replace that?▾

Not from Essentras. Essentras does not offer self-serve rank tracking, backlink analysis or technical site audits, and makes no claim to. If that ongoing, multi-site monitoring function still matters to your team, a dashboard tool in Semrush's own category is the honest fit, not an execution service built around named placements.
