How to get on IMDb

You get on IMDb through a title. The film, series, video or game must be eligible (released, broadcast, sold by an established retailer or shown at a festival), then you add your on-screen credit to it with a free IMDb account. IMDb editors verify it, and your name page is created from that credit.

See every source.

What you will do

  • Check whether your title is eligible, using IMDb’s own list of reasons.
  • Add the title with the evidence IMDb accepts, step by step.
  • Create your name page by adding your credit to that title.
  • See how long IMDb takes, from its own processing queue.
  • Decide whether you need IMDbPro: Basic is free, Premium costs $19.99 a month.
  • Know what IMDb refuses, and what STARmeter can and cannot tell you.

Title eligibility: IMDb lists a title only when the public can see it

IMDb’s rule is general public interest: the title is, or has been, available to the public. Existence is not enough. IMDb says it is checking whether a title meets its listing criteria, not whether the title exists.

What IMDb usually needs, by title type
Feature or short filmA theatrical release open to the public, a screening at a qualifying selective or competitive festival, or a showing on non-local TV
Made for video, video gameDistribution by an established retailer; for direct-to-video, sales from a sufficiently non-local retailer other than the filmmakers, or a deal with an established distributor
Made for TV: series, TV movie, pilotA broadcast on a non-local station, or evidence of airing on a major market station or a national network
In production or developmentProduction contacts, trade announcements, interviews, casting notices or development deals, plus a high-profile track record of eligible titles; IMDb points you to IMDbProSource: IMDb Help Center[1][2][3]

What IMDb does not accept as evidence

  • The production company’s, director’s or cast’s own website. IMDb says those are not third-party sites.Source: IMDb Help Center[1][2]
  • Facebook Pages and Wikipedia entries.Source: IMDb Help Center
  • A home page or a vague mention: IMDb wants a direct link to the page that holds the information.Source: IMDb Help Center
  • Your word. IMDb says it cannot rely on a promise that a title will be released.Source: IMDb Help Center

Unreleased, low-budget and short films have the hardest time. IMDb says third-party evidence is particularly hard to find for them and that it is unlikely to include them until they are completed and screened.

AI-made titles are listed, with a label

IMDb lists AI-generated, AI-assisted and AI-enhanced titles that meet the standard rules, as long as the title page carries keywords such as #ai-generated-title. You add them under Recommended Information in the contribution form.

Source: IMDb Help Center

How to add a title to IMDb, step by step

Any free IMDb account can submit a title through the New Title form. IMDb’s editors approve every title, and IMDb says missing evidence links are among the most common reasons it declines one.

Source: IMDb Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2][3]

How to add a new title to IMDb

  1. 1. Search first

Search IMDb for the title, including other spellings and years. If it is already listed, use the Update or Edit button on its page instead of adding it again.

  2. 2. Open the New Title form

Use the Edit page button on your name page, or open the New Title form directly. Enter the title and year, then choose the type, such as Film or Made for TV.

  3. 3. Add the evidence links

Paste direct links to third-party pages that prove eligibility: a festival schedule with your screening date, a TV schedule, a retailer product page or a streaming page.

  4. 4. Add the details you can verify

Include cast and crew, dates and companies. A budget is optional: if it is confidential, leave it out rather than guess.

  5. 5. Label AI use

If the title uses AI, add the matching keywords, such as #ai-generated-title, under Recommended Information.

  6. 6. Explain anything unusual

If the title qualifies for another reason, say so in the optional explanation on the form.

  7. 7. Submit and track it

You get an email receipt. The Track Contribution button shows whether the title is published, pending, declined or needs more data.

If IMDb asks for more information, go back to your contribution history, open the original submission and add the evidence there. IMDb says resending the same data, or the same film under several spellings, does not help and can delay it.

How your name page gets created: add your credit to an eligible title

There is no separate sign-up for a name page. IMDb says it can only add credits to titles already in the database, and that you can create a new name page while submitting a credit from a title page.

Source: IMDb Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2]

How to add yourself to IMDb

  1. 1. Make sure you are not already listed

Search your name, including other spellings. IMDb says that unless your career has just started, 1 of your credits is likely already listed.

  2. 2. Make sure the title is listed

If it is not, add it through the New Title form first, then add yourself once it is on IMDb.

  3. 3. Open the title’s Edit page

On the title page, click Edit page. Find your department under Cast and Crew, choose to add credits, then click Continue.

  4. 4. Enter your name

Type your name and click Check these updates. If IMDb lists people with the same name and none is you, choose the option to create a new person, or let IMDb staff decide.

  5. 5. Add the character or role

Cast: the character name as it appears in the credits. Crew: your role as credited on screen.

  6. 6. Set the attribute and order

Put (uncredited) in the attribute box if your name was not in the credits, and an order number only if you were credited.

  7. 7. Add evidence and submit

Tick Provide an explanation to assist in processing this submission, upload a screen grab of the credits, then click Submit these updates.

Evidence: what proves a credit

IMDb’s 2 credit pages read differently. Its newer credits guide (updated 28 April 2026) lists third-party news articles, a streaming link, a screen grab of the end credits, pay stubs, call sheets, contracts and receipts as evidence likely to be accepted. Its eligibility FAQ (updated 5 January 2026) says call sheets, contracts and payment receipts are not evidence of on-screen billing. When you were credited, lead with the screen grab.

STARmeter, honestly: built on page views, updated weekly, not for sale

STARmeter ranks the people in IMDb by public interest. IMDb says the primary measure is who and what people look at on IMDb, and that the rankings update weekly, typically by the end of Monday.

Source: IMDb Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026

What it measures

Interest, not quality. IMDb says a high rank does not necessarily mean something is good, only that public awareness or interest is high.

Source: IMDb Help Center

What feeds it

Page views across more than 11 million titles and 8.7 million people, from more than 200 million monthly visitors, plus other measures IMDb does not disclose.

Source: IMDb Help Center

Why it jumps

Lower-ranked names move more. IMDb says small changes in visits produce large changes in rank when few people visit a page.

Source: IMDb Help Center

Why you cannot rig it

IMDb says the actions of 1 user or a small group have limited impact, and that it monitors for fraudulent traffic and keeps improving the algorithm to neutralize ballot stuffing.

Source: IMDb Help Center

Who can see it

Your own STARmeter ranking shows with IMDbPro Basic; the full rankings need Premium.

Source: IMDb Help Center[1][2]

What raises it, in our view

Real interest in the work: a release, a festival run, press about the project. Bought traffic is what IMDb says it watches for and neutralizes.

Source: IMDb Help Center

Offers to “boost your STARmeter”

A service that sells visits to your IMDb page is selling the kind of traffic IMDb says it monitors and designs its algorithm to neutralize. Spend the money on the work people would visit the page for.

What IMDb does not allow, and where paid help fits

IMDb lists what it rejects across its title, credit and biography guides. Most of it traces back to 1 rule in its credits guide: it accepts only submissions that are accurate and verifiable when you submit them.

FAQ

Getting on IMDb: questions people ask

How do I get my name on IMDb?▾

Add your credit to a title that is already on IMDb. Open the title page, click Edit page, choose your department under Cast and Crew, add your name and role, and submit with evidence such as a screen grab of the credits. If you are not listed yet, IMDb lets you create a new name page from that credit (IMDb, checked 19 Oct 2026).

Can I create an IMDb page for myself without credits?▾

No. IMDb is centered on titles: it can only add credits to titles already in the database, and a name page is created from a credit on an eligible title. Without a credit on a film, TV, web, video or game title there is nothing to attach a name page to (IMDb, checked 19 Oct 2026).

Does it cost money to get on IMDb?▾

No. Anybody with a free IMDb account can submit titles and credits, and IMDb’s editors review them. IMDbPro is optional: Basic is free and lets you claim your page, while Premium costs $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year after a 30-day free trial and adds photos, demo reels and Known For credits (IMDb, checked 19 Oct 2026).

How long does it take to get on IMDb?▾

IMDb targets the first business day after submission for titles, names and credits, but its queue can lag: on 19 Oct 2026 its oldest unprocessed title dated from 9 Oct 2026. Its help pages say new titles are usually processed within a few days, and its credits guide says a request should take 12 to 48 hours to appear.

What counts as proof for a new title on IMDb?▾

Direct links to third-party pages that show eligibility: a festival schedule with your screening date, a TV schedule, a retailer product page or a streaming page. IMDb does not accept the production’s own website, the director’s or cast’s sites, Facebook Pages or Wikipedia entries, and it says existence is not the same as eligibility (IMDb, checked 19 Oct 2026).

Can I add a short film or a web series to IMDb?▾

Yes, if it meets the rule of general public interest. IMDb accepts short films and web series, but for films it usually wants a public theatrical release, a screening at a selective or competitive festival or a non-local TV showing, and it says unreleased, low-budget and short films are unlikely to be listed until completed and screened.

Can I pay to raise my STARmeter?▾

Not in any way IMDb accepts. IMDb says STARmeter is built mainly from what people look at on IMDb, that 1 user or a small group has limited impact, and that it monitors for fraudulent traffic and improves the algorithm to neutralize ballot stuffing. Real interest in your work, such as a release or press about it, is what moves the rank.

Can I add a credit if my name was not in the credits?▾

Sometimes. IMDb lists credits as they appear on screen in the original release. If you worked on a title but were not credited, you can submit the credit with (uncredited) in the attribute field, and IMDb says acceptance is entirely at its editors’ discretion. A contract that promised a credit is not enough on its own.

Do I need IMDbPro to get on IMDb?▾

No. Titles and credits are added with a free IMDb account. IMDbPro matters for control: the free Basic plan lets you claim your page, edit personal details and see your own STARmeter, while Premium adds photos, demo reels, Known For credits and industry contacts. IMDb points in-development projects to IMDbPro (IMDb, checked 19 Oct 2026).

Can someone else create my IMDb page for me?▾

Yes. Anybody with a free IMDb account can submit titles and credits, and IMDb notes that an agent, a manager or a family member may claim a page on your behalf. Whoever submits, IMDb’s editors verify every title and credit against its rules, so the evidence matters more than who sends it.
