Amazon for sellers

How to remove negative seller feedback on Amazon

The short answer

Amazon removes seller feedback only for 6 reasons, such as profanity, personal information, another seller’s product, or a comment that is entirely a product review. It strikes through FBA delivery complaints. Request review in Feedback Manager within 90 days of the feedback; any other channel risks your account. You may not ask buyers to remove it.

Know which one you have

Seller feedback is not a product review: what each one is, and where each goes

Amazon defines a product review as a customer’s evaluation of the product and seller feedback as their experience with the seller: shipping, packaging and customer service. Each has its own policy, its own report button and its own effect on your account.

When a buyer posts in the wrong place

A product review left as seller feedback

If the whole comment is about the product, request review in Feedback Manager: it is 1 of Amazon’s 6 removal reasons. If it also criticizes your service, it stays.

Seller complaints left as a product review

Amazon’s Community Guidelines keep comments about sellers and their customer service out of product reviews. Use the Report button under the review on the product page.

Product condition comments

Amazon’s UK page says comments about the accuracy of a product description or the condition of a product are kept as seller feedback, and an FBA comment that touches the product’s condition is not struck through.

What a negative rating costs you

The real risk is the Order Defect Rate on orders you ship yourself: above 1%, Amazon says it may suspend your Fulfilled by Merchant selling privileges. Negative feedback is counted by order date, and feedback a buyer withdraws leaves the rate within up to 48 hours.

Amazon’s rules

What Amazon removes, strikes through, and leaves up

Amazon’s seller-side list is short and exact. Feedback outside it stays, however unfair it feels; Amazon’s own help page says it has no control over the feedback you receive.

The 6 reasons Amazon removes seller feedback

1. Profanity or obscenity

Profanity, obscenities or language commonly seen as inappropriate in public forums.

2. Hate speech

Language expressing hatred toward people for characteristics such as race, religion, gender, age or disability.

3. Personal information

Personally identifiable information, including email addresses, full names or telephone numbers.

4. Another seller’s product

The feedback refers to a product sold by a different seller.

5. Your own brand’s product

The feedback relates to a product for which you are the brand owner or an authorized reseller.

6. Entirely a product review

The whole comment reviews the product. If it also mentions your service, it stays.

Strike-through: the comment stays, the rating stops counting

CaseAmazon’s conditionWhat buyers see
Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA)The entire comment is about the delivery experience of an FBA order, and you request removal. Not if any part concerns the product’s listed condition (New, Used and so on) or a service you provided instead of Amazon, and not for merchant-fulfilled orders sent through Multi-Channel FulfillmentThe rating struck through and Amazon’s note that it takes responsibility for the fulfillment experience
Buy ShippingThe entire comment is about a delayed or undelivered order you shipped on time using Buy ShippingThe rating struck through and Amazon’s note that the fulfillment issues were not due to the seller

A struck-through or removed rating no longer counts in your feedback rating or performance metrics. Amazon warns against sending high volumes of incorrect or speculative requests.

Usually removed or struck through

  • A comment that only reviews the product
  • Feedback that names a person or shows an email address or phone number
  • Feedback about an item another seller sold
  • An FBA delivery complaint with nothing about the product
  • A delayed order you shipped on time with Buy Shipping

Usually stays (reply instead)

  • A mix of product criticism and service criticism
  • Complaints about the product’s condition or the accuracy of your listing
  • Delays from customs or other events outside your control
  • Harsh but honest criticism of your service
  • A low rating you think the buyer chose by mistake: you cannot edit it

Step by step

How to request removal in Feedback Manager, step by step

Feedback Manager is the only channel Amazon accepts for feedback removal. The steps below come from Amazon’s help pages; the Feedback Manager screen itself sits behind the Seller Central sign-in.

How to request removal of Amazon seller feedback

  1. 01Match the feedback to 1 reasonCheck it against Amazon’s 6 removal reasons and the 2 strike-through cases. If none fits, skip to your public reply.
  2. 02Open Feedback ManagerIn Seller Central, go to Performance, then Feedback. Amazon’s help page also offers an order ID check for eligibility.
  3. 03Select Request reviewIn the Recent feedback table, find the order ID and select Request review under the Actions column. Older pages call it Request removal.
  4. 04Pick the reason and add evidenceChoose the reason that matches Amazon’s removal policy, and use Comments to say why the feedback does not align with it (templates 1 to 4).
  5. 05Submit within 90 daysSelect Submit. Amazon’s system blocks requests more than 90 days after the feedback was posted.
  6. 06Track the decisionFollow the request in the Manage Review Requests tab: Under review, Approved or Denied. If it is denied, Appeal Decision is available until the deadline shown.

For feedback you believe is abusive, Amazon points to Report a violation for an additional review. For buyers who threaten bad feedback or reviews, Amazon says sellers can use Report Abuse from the Account Health dashboard.

Do not use Contact Us for this

Amazon says requesting feedback removal through Contact Us, or any channel other than Feedback Manager, may lead to account deactivation. Several ranking guides still tell sellers to open a support case: do not.

Feedback Manager (Seller Central sign-in)

Amazon’s own pages:Amazon Seller Central: Request feedback reviewAmazon Seller Central: About Feedback ManagerAmazon Seller Central: Report a violation

If it stays

If Amazon says no: 1 appeal, the buyer, and your public reply

A denied request leaves 3 things: an appeal before the deadline, fixing the buyer’s problem without mentioning the feedback, and a public reply that future buyers will read.

Appeal once, in time

For a Denied request, select Appeal Decision before the deadline Feedback Manager shows. After that deadline, Amazon says the case cannot be reopened. Lead with what is new (template 5).

Fix the problem, not the feedback

Contact the buyer through Buyer-Seller Messaging, the only approved channel, to put the problem right. Amazon says pressuring or incentivizing a buyer to remove or change negative feedback breaks its policies, and its own example of a banned message asks a buyer to delete feedback after a fix.

Only the buyer can withdraw it

Buyers can remove feedback at their discretion; Seller Central says within 60 days of posting it, while another Seller Central page says at any time. Once removed, they cannot post new feedback for that order.

Post a public reply

In Feedback Manager, use the Choose one menu and Post a public reply. It does not change your score. You cannot edit it, only delete it, and if you delete it you cannot post another.

Amazon’s rules for public replies

  • Do not ask the buyer questions or start a dialogue: buyers cannot answer a public reply.
  • Leave out any private information about you or the buyer.
  • For delays caused by customs or other events outside your control, Amazon suggests a reply that says so.
  • If the buyer’s feedback is removed or suppressed later, your reply goes with it.

What you may not send to buyers

Amazon’s communication rules ban messages that ask buyers to update or delete a non-favorable review or seller feedback, any incentive (money, gift cards, refunds, replacements or future benefits) for feedback, asking more than once per order, and language that tells unhappy buyers to contact you first while happy ones review. Use Request a Review, once per order, or nothing.

Templates

8 copy-ready texts for Amazon seller feedback

Templates 1 to 5 go in the Comments box of Feedback Manager; 6 goes through Buyer-Seller Messaging; 7 and 8 are public replies. Replace everything in [square brackets] and delete any line that is not true.

Before you send anything

  • Name 1 of Amazon’s reasons and quote the exact words that meet it.
  • Use Feedback Manager for every request: never Contact Us, email or phone.
  • Never ask a buyer to remove or change feedback, and never offer anything for it.
  • Keep the buyer’s name, email and address out of every request and reply.

Template 1: The whole comment is a product review

When to use it: Feedback that only reviews the item, with nothing about your service.

Comments box

Order [order ID]. The entire feedback comment reviews the product, not our service: "[quote the comment]".
It says nothing about shipping, packaging or customer service, so it matches Amazon's removal reason for feedback that is entirely a product review.

If the comment also criticizes your service, Amazon keeps it: do not send this one.

Template 2: Profanity, hate speech or personal information

When to use it: Feedback whose words break 1 of these 3 reasons.

Comments box

Order [order ID]. The feedback contains [profanity / hate speech / personally identifiable information: (an email address / a full name / a phone number)].
The words are: "[quote only the words needed, and do not repeat personal details]".
This matches Amazon's removal reasons for seller feedback.

Template 3: Another seller’s product

When to use it: The buyer reviewed an item that someone else sold.

Comments box

Order [order ID] contained [your item and ASIN]. The feedback refers to [the other product, quoted], which we did not sell on this order.
This matches Amazon's removal reason for feedback about a product sold by a different seller.

Template 4: FBA delivery or on-time Buy Shipping

When to use it: A delivery complaint on an FBA order, or a late or lost order you shipped on time with Buy Shipping.

Comments box

Order [order ID] was [fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) / shipped on time on (date) using Buy Shipping, tracking (number)].
The entire comment is about [delivery timing / an undelivered package]: "[quote]". It says nothing about the product's condition or our service.
Please apply the strike-through for [FBA delivery feedback / Buy Shipping orders shipped on time].

Not for Multi-Channel Fulfillment orders, and not if any part of the comment is about the product’s condition.

Template 5: Appeal a Denied request

When to use it: In Appeal Decision, before the deadline Feedback Manager shows.

Appeal text

Order [order ID]. Original request: [date], reason: [reason chosen]. Status: Denied.
What is new: [the detail the first request missed, for example: the comment names our employee in full, see "(quote)" / the order shipped with Buy Shipping on (date), tracking (number)].
This matches Amazon's removal reason for [the reason, in your words]. Please review the decision.

Template 6: Buyer-Seller message to fix the problem

When to use it: After negative feedback, to put the problem right. It never mentions the feedback.

Buyer-Seller Messaging

Hi [first name], we are sorry order [order ID] [arrived late / was not what you expected / (the problem)]. We have [sent a replacement, tracking (number) / issued a refund of (amount)], following our usual policy. If anything else is wrong with this order, reply to this message and we will help.
[Your name], [store name]

No request to update or remove feedback, no incentive, and only 1 message about it. Amazon bans all 3.

Template 7: Public reply to a fair complaint

When to use it: The buyer had a real problem. Post it once in Feedback Manager.

Public reply

We are sorry this order [arrived late / was packed poorly]. We contacted the buyer, [refunded / replaced] the item on [date], and have since [the change you made].

No questions to the buyer: they cannot answer a public reply.

Template 8: Public reply when the cause was outside your control

When to use it: Customs holds, carrier disruption or similar events, which Amazon suggests explaining in a reply.

Public reply

This order shipped on [date], within our handling time. Delivery was delayed by [a customs hold / (the event)] outside our control. We kept the buyer updated and [the remedy, if any].

FAQ

Removing Amazon seller feedback: FAQ

Can you remove negative seller feedback on Amazon?▾

Only Amazon can, and only for 6 reasons: profanity, hate speech, personal information, a product sold by another seller, a product you own the brand of or resell as authorized, or a comment that is entirely a product review. FBA delivery complaints and on-time Buy Shipping orders are struck through instead. Request review in Feedback Manager within 90 days.

What is the difference between seller feedback and a product review?▾

Seller feedback rates your service on an order (shipping, packaging, customer service) and shows on your seller profile and offers. A product review rates the product on its detail page. Feedback is challenged in Feedback Manager; a review through the Report button under it. Negative feedback counts in your Order Defect Rate; product reviews do not.

How long do I have to request removal of Amazon feedback?▾

90 days from the day the feedback was posted. Amazon’s system blocks requests after that. If Amazon denies the request, Appeal Decision is available until the deadline Feedback Manager shows; after it, the case cannot be reopened.

How long does Amazon take to decide?▾

Amazon does not state a time. Track the request in the Manage Review Requests tab, where it shows Under review, Approved or Denied. When a buyer withdraws negative feedback, Amazon says it can take up to 48 hours to leave your Order Defect Rate.

Does Amazon remove negative feedback on FBA orders?▾

It strikes it through instead, when the whole comment is about the delivery of an FBA order. The comment stays visible with Amazon’s note that it takes responsibility for the fulfillment, and the rating stops counting. If any part of the comment is about the product’s condition, it stays as it is.

Can I ask the buyer to remove negative feedback?▾

No. Amazon bans asking buyers to remove or change feedback, even after you resolve the issue, and bans any incentive for it. You may contact the buyer through Buyer-Seller Messaging to fix the problem. Removing the feedback is the buyer’s decision alone.

Does negative feedback affect my Order Defect Rate?▾

Yes, on orders you fulfill yourself. Order Defect Rate counts 1 and 2 star feedback, A-to-z Guarantee claims and chargebacks over 60 days, by order date, and Amazon requires it below 1%. A granted removal takes the feedback out of the rate.

Can I respond to negative feedback on Amazon?▾

Yes, with Post a public reply in Feedback Manager. It does not change your score. You cannot edit it, only delete it, and after deleting you cannot post a second reply. Do not ask questions: the buyer cannot answer.

What if a buyer threatens negative feedback to get a refund or extras?▾

Do not pay for the feedback. Keep every message in Buyer-Seller Messaging and report the buyer: Amazon says sellers can use Report Abuse from the Account Health dashboard, and Report a violation for abusive feedback. Then request review in Feedback Manager if the feedback meets a removal reason.

Can Essentras remove Amazon seller feedback for me?▾

No. Amazon decides every request, and Essentras does not sell Amazon feedback removal. We can give you a free case read by email, saying which of Amazon’s reasons fits or that the feedback will stay. You file every request from your own Seller Central account.

What Amazon does not say, so this page does not either

  • How long Amazon takes to decide a request or an appeal, how long the appeal deadline is, and whether decisions are automated.
  • The reasons in Feedback Manager’s drop-down menu: Amazon publishes the policy, not the menu.
  • The buyer’s window to remove feedback: 1 Seller Central page says 60 days from posting, another says at any time, and the buyer help page states no limit.
  • Which rating buyers see with exactly 10 entries in 12 months: Amazon describes more than 10 and fewer than 10.
  • Whether Amazon’s EU illegal-content route covers seller feedback, and whether Brand Registry’s Report a Violation covers review abuse.
