eBay for sellers

How to remove negative feedback on eBay

The short answer

eBay removes negative or neutral feedback only when its Feedback policy applies: threats, personal details, the wrong item, an issue the listing disclosed, an abusive buyer, or delays eBay can see were outside your control. Request removal through Seller Help within 90 days of the transaction. Otherwise, send a revision request within 30 days, or reply once, publicly.

Key facts, checked on 19 Oct 2026

  • eBay removes clear policy breaches automatically; for cases that are not clear-cut it reviews feedback when the seller asks through Seller Help. If it qualifies, eBay emails you and removes it within 24 hours.

    eBay: Feedback policy

  • Removal requests go through Seller Help within 90 days of the transaction. Seller Help is open to sellers who listed or sold an item within the past 120 days.

    eBay: Seller performance overview

  • Revision requests: only for feedback under 30 days old; 5 per calendar year, plus 5 more for every 1,000 feedback ratings received that year. The buyer has 10 days to accept or decline.

eBay: Viewing and responding to feedback

  • You can reply once to each feedback comment, and you cannot edit or retract the reply.

eBay: Viewing and responding to feedback

  • eBay says negative or neutral feedback “doesn’t impact seller performance”. Defects are seller cancellations and cases closed without seller resolution.

    eBay: Feedback policy

  • Buyers have 60 days from receipt or the expected delivery date, whichever comes first (90 days from purchase without an expected date), and need an account at least 5 days old.

    eBay: Leaving feedback for sellers

    eBay: Viewing and changing feedback

  • Since 14 Oct 2024 eBay has dropped 2 return grounds from its Feedback policy and added the partial-revision invitation and an explicit ban on fake or manipulated feedback.

How it works

How eBay feedback works: who can leave it, for how long, and what it changes

Knowing the mechanics tells you what is worth fighting. Negative feedback is a permanent part of a seller’s record unless eBay removes it or the buyer revises it, but eBay says it does not affect your seller level.

Hiding feedbackYou cannot sell on eBay with private feedback: sellers’ feedback must be visible to everyoneFeedback profile

Why this matters before you act

Because negative feedback does not count against your seller level, the real cost is what future buyers read. That is why eBay itself recommends a thoughtful reply, and why 1 calm reply often matters more than a removal request that does not fit a ground.

eBay’s rules

What eBay removes, and what it leaves up

eBay’s Feedback policy lists the grounds in 6 groups. For each one, eBay says it makes sure it has factual evidence before it removes anything. What it will not do is contradict a buyer’s opinion or judgment of an item.

Harmful or irrelevant content (any rating)

Hate, violence or discrimination; profane, obscene, adult, illegal or explicit content; political, religious or social opinions; threats or intimidation; personal information; links or content pushing sales off eBay; third-party rights; meaningless content or photos that are not of the item; comments meant for another item or seller; a comment that contradicts its rating; personal attacks that are not reasonably constructive criticism.

Extortion and manipulation

Feedback used to extort another member, or to manipulate feedback ratings. Creating, soliciting or using fake, misleading or manipulated feedback is not allowed.

Buyer-related issues

Neutral or negative feedback when eBay can see the buyer asked to cancel after committing to buy, the order was canceled over their address or because they did not pay, the issue was correctly disclosed in the listing, the buyer was actioned under the Abusive buyer policy, or they asked for an order change after paying.

Delivery issues

Delivery complaints where tracking shows the delivery or handling time was met, carrier delays caused by a natural disaster or unexpected event, and customs or tax issues outside your control that eBay can identify.

Returns issues

A change-of-mind return you declined because the listing offered no returns, and a change-of-mind buyer who was liable for the eBay return label.

eBay site or program issues

Complaints about not being able to retract a bid, eBay technical issues it can identify, a Money Back Guarantee case or payment dispute closed with you meeting your obligations, on-time eBay International Shipping or Global Shipping Program orders, Authenticity Guarantee items that shipped on time and passed, and eBay’s parts fitment returns where you met your obligations.

Usually removed (with proof eBay can check)

  • A buyer demanding free extras or a discount, with the demand in eBay messages
  • A stain, flaw or condition the listing clearly disclosed
  • A late-delivery complaint when tracking shows you shipped on time
  • Feedback from a buyer eBay suspends, or a buyer who never paid
  • A comment clearly about a different item

Usually stays (reply instead)

  • An honest complaint about a flaw the listing did not mention
  • A buyer’s opinion of the item’s quality or value
  • Strong criticism of your service that is not a personal attack
  • A case where eBay steps in and finds you must refund the buyer
  • Anything you cannot back with facts eBay can see

eBay’s own example: a buyer complains about a small stain. If the listing disclosed it, the feedback is removable. If the listing said “excellent condition” and never mentioned the stain, it stays, and eBay suggests a reply that offers a return.

When eBay removes it on its own

Seller protections remove related negative or neutral feedback in these cases, usually without a request. For the 2 delivery cases marked “ask”, request removal yourself.

SituationWhat eBay does
eBay finds the buyer abusiveRemoves their negative and neutral feedback and the related defects
A buyer demands changes to your listing terms and you cancel or complete on the original termsRemoves related negative or neutral feedback when it can see the demands in eBay messages
The buyer did not pay in time and you canceledRemoves related feedback and the canceled order defect
A Money Back Guarantee case or appeal closed with you meeting your obligationsRemoves related negative or neutral feedback and defects
The buyer never shipped a return backRemoves negative or neutral feedback once the case closes automatically
A payment dispute covered by eBay’s payment dispute seller protectionsRemoves negative and neutral feedback related to the transaction
Top Rated seller and a buyer falsely claimed an item was not as described (US or Canada, conditions apply)Removes related negative or neutral feedback automatically
Late arrival but tracking shows on-time shipping, or severe weather or carrier disruptionAsk: request removal of the related feedback

Not protected: if eBay steps in and finds you are responsible for refunding the buyer, the feedback stays and counts as a case closed without seller resolution.

Step by step

How to ask eBay to remove feedback, step by step

The request goes through Seller Help, from your own account. eBay’s help pages do not show the Seller Help screens (they sit behind sign-in), so the steps below follow eBay’s policy pages, not screenshots.

How to request removal of eBay feedback

  1. 01Match the feedback to 1 groundRead it against the 6 groups in eBay’s Feedback policy and pick the 1 ground that fits, such as an issue the listing disclosed or a demand for extras.
  2. 02Collect proof eBay can seeeBay messages with the buyer’s demand, the tracking record, the listing text, or the number and outcome of the case or payment dispute.
  3. 03Open Seller HelpSign in and use the Request feedback removal button on eBay’s seller performance help page. Seller Help is open if you listed or sold an item within the past 120 days.
  4. 04Explain it in 3 linesName the ground, point to the proof, and say which part breaks the policy: the comment, the rating or a photo (template 1).
  5. 05Send it within 90 dayseBay’s window is 90 days from the transaction, not from the feedback.
  6. 06Watch your emailIf it qualifies, eBay emails you and removes it within 24 hours. If not, eBay explains why it is allowed. Your next moves are a revision request and a reply.

eBay may remove the whole feedback or only the comment, rating or image that breaks the policy. If only part of the comment does, it may invite the buyer to revise it, and both of you get an email.

The proof that fits each ground

GroundWhat to point eBay to
Extortion or a demand for extrasThe eBay message with the demand and its date; never move the conversation off eBay
Disclosed in the listingThe item number and the exact line of the listing that disclosed it
Delivery outside your controlThe tracking number, the handling time you promised and the carrier scan dates
Buyer did not pay or asked to cancelThe order number and the cancellation record
Case or dispute closed in your favorThe case or dispute number and its outcome
Wrong item, threats, personal informationThe feedback itself: quote it and say which policy line it breaks

If it stays

If eBay keeps it: 1 revision request and 1 reply

When no ground fits, 2 things remain: ask the buyer to revise it, after you have fixed the problem, and reply once in public. Neither has a paid version.

How the revision request works

  1. 1Check the date: you can send a request only while the feedback is less than 30 days old.
  2. 2Check your allowance: 5 requests per calendar year, plus 5 more for every 1,000 feedback ratings you receive that year.
  3. 3Fix the problem first (a replacement, a refund, an answer), under the same terms you offer every buyer.
  4. 4Use the Request a feedback revision link on eBay’s help page (eBay sign-in required). eBay emails the buyer the details.
  5. 5The buyer has 10 days: Accept request lets them change the rating and comment, and their original comment is no longer visible; Decline request lets them give a reason or keep it private.
  6. 6If the buyer declines or does not answer in 10 days, the feedback stays as it is.

Your reply: 1 chance, permanent

Where

Open your Feedback profile, find the feedback and select Reply on the right. Your reply appears directly under the buyer’s comment.

The limit

You can reply once to each feedback comment, and you cannot edit or retract the reply. Write it, wait an hour, then post it.

What works

Thank the buyer, state the facts once, and say what you did or offer to fix it. eBay’s own example reply invites the buyer to open a return.

What to leave out

Personal details, accusations, and anything about the buyer’s other feedback. Personal information and personal attacks are grounds eBay removes in feedback; do not put them in your reply either.

Never pay for a revision

eBay’s Feedback manipulation policy bans discounts, free items or any incentive for positive feedback. Offer the fix every buyer gets, and never make a refund depend on the feedback.

Templates

8 copy-ready messages for eBay feedback

Paste these into Seller Help, the revision request, your reply or an eBay report. Replace everything in [square brackets] and delete any line that is not true.

Before you send anything

  • Point eBay to something it can check inside eBay: a message, a tracking record, the listing, a case number.
  • Quote the feedback exactly. Name 1 ground from eBay’s Feedback policy.
  • No threats, no accusations you cannot show, and nothing offered in exchange for a change.
  • Keep the buyer’s personal details out of every message and reply.

Template 1: Seller Help removal request (any ground)

When to use it: In Seller Help, within 90 days of the transaction.

Request text

Order [order number], item [item number], sold on [date].
Feedback: [negative / neutral] left by [buyer user ID] on [date]: "[quote the comment]".
Policy ground: [the ground from eBay's Feedback policy, for example: the buyer is raising an issue that was correctly disclosed in the listing].
What eBay can check: [the listing line that discloses it / tracking number [number] showing delivery on [date] / the eBay message of [date] / case number [number] and its outcome].
Please review this feedback under the Feedback policy and remove the [comment / rating / photo] that breaks it.

Template 2: Feedback extortion

When to use it: When a buyer demanded extras, a discount or other terms, and the demand is in eBay messages.

Request text

Order [order number]. On [date] the buyer wrote in eBay messages: "[quote the demand]".
We completed the order on the original listing terms [or: canceled the order] and did not agree to the demand.
On [date] the buyer left [negative / neutral] feedback: "[quote]".
This feedback is being used as a means to extort a member, which eBay's Feedback policy does not allow. Please remove it.

Keep every exchange inside eBay messages: eBay acts on demands it can see there.

Template 3: Delivery outside your control

When to use it: A late-delivery complaint where tracking shows you met your handling time, or a carrier, weather or customs problem.

Request text

Order [order number]. Handling time in the listing: [N] business days. We shipped on [date] with [carrier], tracking [number]; first carrier scan [date].
[Choose 1: Delivery was delayed by [the carrier disruption or weather event] / The buyer was charged import duties outside our control / Tracking shows delivery on [date], within the estimate.]
The feedback of [date] is about this delivery issue. Please remove it under the delivery grounds of the Feedback policy.

Template 4: Disclosed in the listing

When to use it: The buyer complains about a flaw, condition or term your listing stated.

Request text

Order [order number], item [item number]. The listing stated: "[quote the exact line, for example: small stain inside the left sleeve, shown in photo 4]".
The feedback of [date] says: "[quote]". The buyer is raising an issue that was correctly disclosed in the listing.
Please remove the feedback under the buyer-related grounds of the Feedback policy.

Template 5: Note with your revision request

When to use it: After you fixed the problem, inside the 30 days. Send it once.

Message to the buyer

Hi [first name], thank you for telling us about [the problem]. We [sent a replacement on (date) / refunded (amount) on (date) / fixed (the issue)].
If you feel your feedback no longer reflects the order, eBay has emailed you a revision request. There is no obligation either way, and nothing depends on your answer.
[Your name], [shop name]

Never pair the request with a refund, discount or gift: eBay bans incentives for feedback.

Template 6: Reply to a fair complaint

When to use it: The buyer had a real problem. Your 1 reply, under their comment.

Public reply

Sorry about [the problem]. We [refunded / replaced / changed (the process)] on [date] and now [what you do differently]. Message us any time.

Short, specific, permanent: you cannot edit it later.

Template 7: Reply to feedback you dispute

When to use it: The facts are wrong, and no removal ground applied.

Public reply

Shipped [date], within our [N]-day handling time; tracking shows delivery on [date]. We offered a [return / refund] on [date] and are still happy to help.

State the checkable facts once. No accusations, no buyer details.

Template 8: Report content notice (EU or UK)

When to use it: Feedback you believe is illegal under EU or national law, through Report content.

Notice text

Content: feedback left on [date] by [buyer user ID] on [link to your feedback profile or the order].
Why it is illegal: [the specific statement, quoted] [explain which law it breaks and why, for example a false statement of fact that is defamatory under (country) law].
Reporter: [your name], [business], [email].
I confirm in good faith that the information and allegations in this notice are accurate and complete.

Only for content you believe is illegal. eBay can stop processing reports from people who repeatedly send unfounded ones.

FAQ

Removing negative feedback on eBay: FAQ

Can you remove negative feedback on eBay?▾

Only eBay can remove it, and only on a ground in its Feedback policy, such as threats, personal information, a comment about another item, extortion, an issue the listing disclosed, or delivery problems eBay can see were outside your control. Request it through Seller Help within 90 days of the transaction. Otherwise, the buyer can revise it after your request.

How long do I have to ask eBay to remove feedback?▾

90 days from the transaction, through Seller Help. Seller Help is open to sellers who listed or sold an item within the past 120 days. For a revision request to the buyer, the feedback must be less than 30 days old.

How long does eBay take to remove feedback?▾

eBay says that if feedback qualifies, it emails you and removes it from your account within 24 hours. It does not state how long its review takes before that. If the feedback does not qualify, eBay explains why it is allowed.

How many feedback revision requests can I send?▾

5 per calendar year, plus 5 more for every 1,000 feedback ratings you receive that year, and only for feedback less than 30 days old. The buyer has 10 days to accept or decline. If they decline or do not answer, the feedback stays.

Can a buyer delete negative feedback they left?▾

Not on their own. eBay says buyers cannot edit or delete feedback unless the seller sends a revision request. A buyer can add 1 follow-up comment per item, which does not change the original rating or comment. Positive feedback can never be changed to neutral or negative.

Does negative feedback hurt my eBay seller level?▾

eBay says negative or neutral feedback does not affect seller performance. Defects are seller cancellations and cases closed without seller resolution. The exception: without tracking, a buyer’s answer in the feedback flow that the item arrived late counts as a late shipment.

Can I reply to negative feedback on eBay?▾

Yes, once. Open your Feedback profile, find the feedback and select Reply. The reply appears under the buyer’s comment, and you cannot edit or retract it, so state the facts calmly and say what you did to fix the problem.

A buyer threatens negative feedback unless I give a discount. What do I do?▾

Do not agree, and keep the conversation in eBay messages. eBay removes feedback used to extort a member, and its Seller protections remove related negative or neutral feedback when it can see the buyer’s demands in eBay messages. Cancel or complete the order on the original terms and report the buyer.

Can I offer a refund if the buyer removes the feedback?▾

No. eBay’s Feedback manipulation policy bans discounts, free items or any incentive for positive feedback, and the FTC says paying consumers to change or remove truthful negative reviews may violate the FTC Act. Fix the problem on your normal terms, then send a revision request with no condition attached.

Can Essentras remove eBay feedback for me?▾

No. eBay decides every removal, and Essentras does not sell eBay feedback removal. We can give you a free case read by email, saying which ground in eBay’s policy fits or that the feedback will stay. You file every request from your own eBay account.

What eBay does not say, so this page does not either

  • The Seller Help screens and labels for a feedback removal request: they sit behind sign-in, and no public eBay page shows them.
  • How long eBay’s review takes before the 24-hour removal, and what evidence it wants for each ground.
  • Any appeal in the US against a refused feedback removal. The 6-month appeal applies to eBay’s EU and UK reporting route.
  • Whether a declined or expired revision request still counts against your yearly allowance.
  • Any time limit on your reply, and whether feedback affects where your listings rank in search.
