Search suppression guide
How to push down negative search results
The short answer
To push down a negative search result, publish and promote accurate pages about you that can outrank it: your own site, complete profiles, a Google Knowledge Panel and articles on established outlets. Nothing is deleted and nobody can promise a ranking. Check removal first: a result that breaks Google’s policies or the law can be removed instead.
Below: the removal check that comes first, how Google ranks pages, the 7 steps, what each asset costs (from our catalog of 3,886 priced outlets), what Google says about timing, the tactics that break the rules, and an audit sheet to measure progress yourself.

Removal first
Before you push a result down, check whether it can come down
Suppression is the fallback for results that will stay online. Ask these 4 questions about each negative result. A yes sends it to a removal route, which ends the problem instead of outranking it.
01Can the site owner change or remove the page?
Ask the publisher or site owner first, with the facts that changed. Our remove-your-name guide has request templates.
Request templates02Does it show your contact details, ID numbers, doxxing or explicit images?
Google’s personal information policies cover these, and Google’s own tools to request removal are free. Ask people-search sites to delete the listing at the source too.
Remove personal information from Google03Is it defamatory, a copy of your copyrighted work, or covered by a court order or the right to be forgotten?
A legal route may apply. Google has a legal removal request flow, and some cases need a lawyer.
Remove a negative news article04Is it a review that breaks the platform’s rules?
Report it to the platform with evidence. Genuine negative reviews that follow the rules stay up.
How to remove a Google review
None of these?
Then suppression is the honest route: accurate pages that rank above the result. Nothing is removed, and the result can still be found by anyone who looks further.
Removal, de-indexing and suppression compared
| Route | What happens | Who decides | Cost | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Removal at the source | The site deletes or changes the page. | The site owner or publisher | Free to ask | Force a site that has the right to keep the page. |
| De-indexing | Google stops showing the page for some or all searches. The page stays online. | Google, under its policies or the law | Google’s tools are free. Essentras: $1,650 per name, $2,200 per article. | Delete the page, or change other search engines. |
| Suppression (pushing down) | Other pages outrank the result. Nothing is removed. | Google’s ranking systems | Your time, or placements at $752 to $4,260 each for the middle half of the catalog | Promise a position, or stop the result from moving back up. |

How it works
Suppression is ranking work: nothing is deleted
Pushing down, or suppression, means publishing and promoting accurate pages about a person or business so that they rank above a negative result for the same search. The negative page stays online.
Google describes Search in 3 stages: crawling, indexing and serving. It says not every page makes it through each stage, and that it does not guarantee it will crawl, index or serve any page.
So a new page helps only after Google has found it, stored it and judged it more relevant to the search than the result you want to move. Google also says nobody can pay it to rank a page higher, and that it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often. A position in Google’s organic results cannot be bought.
Google tailors results with information such as location, past Search history and Search settings, so 2 people can see a different page 1 for the same name. That is why progress has to be measured the same way every time.
Google’s 3 stages, and what each one means for your pages
| Stage | What Google says happens | What it means for suppression |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling | Automated programs called crawlers download text, images and videos from pages Google found on the internet. | A new page has to be findable. Link it from your own site and profiles. |
| Indexing | Google analyzes the page and stores the information in its index. Not every page is indexed. | A thin or copied page may never be indexed. A page with specific, accurate information about you has a better chance. |
| Serving | Google returns the information it finds most relevant to the search. | Your page has to be the better answer for that exact search, such as your name with your city or company. |
The process
How to push down a negative search result in 7 steps
The same 7 steps apply whether you do the work yourself or hire help. Steps 1, 2, 6 and 7 cost time, not money, and step 3 needs only a domain and hosting.
- 1
Audit what ranks for your name
Search your name in a private window, plus the variants people use: your name with your city, your company or words such as “reviews” or “complaints”. Record the URL, position, owner and tone of the first 20 results. The audit sheet below lists the columns.
Cost: Free
- 2
Sort every negative result by route
Use the 4 removal questions above. Anything a platform rule or a law covers goes to removal; only the rest needs suppression. Each result can need a different route.
Cost: Free; the removal check is free
- 3
Make the pages you control complete and accurate
Your own site with a page about you, and complete, public profiles on the professional platforms you actually use. Use your name the way people search it, keep the facts the same everywhere and link the pages to each other.
Cost: Free, apart from a domain and hosting
- 4
Build your entity: Knowledge Panel and, only if notable, Wikipedia
Google generates Knowledge Panels automatically and decides whether one appears. Wikipedia covers only notable subjects, and paid editors must disclose who pays them.
Cost: Essentras: $650 for a person panel, $1,200 for a business; Wikipedia $4,000, refunded in full if not published
- 5
Add accurate articles on established outlets
Articles about your work on outlets that Google indexes can rank for your name. Paid placements are paid editorial: check each listing’s indexing status, sponsored label and link policy before you buy.
Cost: $752 to $4,260 per placement for the middle half of 3,886 outlets (14 Oct 2026)
- 6
Keep the pages current
Update the pages you control and publish new, accurate material when you have something real to say. Suppression removes nothing, so if the pages above the result lose ground, it can move back up.
Cost: Free
- 7
Measure on a schedule
Repeat the audit monthly in the same conditions and compare positions. Keep what moves results, stop what does not, and never buy a promise of a position.
Cost: Free

The suppression stack
What can outrank a negative result, and what each one costs
These are the kinds of pages that can rank for a name. None is guaranteed to rank, and each has limits worth knowing before you spend.
| Asset | Who controls it | Cost | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own website | You | A domain, hosting and your time | A new site starts with no history for your name, so give it real, specific content. |
| Professional profiles and directories | You, within each platform’s rules | Usually free | They help only when complete, public and under the name people search. |
| Company bio and team pages | Your employer or company | Free | Ask for a full bio under the name people search, with the same facts as your profiles. |
| Google Knowledge Panel | Google generates it; you can claim it | Essentras $650 for a person, $1,200 for a business, $1,395 for both; refunded if the panel does not go live | Google decides whether a panel appears and what it shows. |
| Wikipedia article | Volunteer editors | Wikipedia charges nothing. Essentras $4,000, refunded in full if the page is not published | Only for notable subjects. Paid editors must disclose it, and paid placements do not count as independent coverage. |
| Paid press placements | The outlet publishes it | $752 to $4,260 for the middle half of 3,886 outlets; median $2,167 | Paid editorial, not earned coverage. Check indexing status, sponsored label and link policy on each listing. |
| Earned coverage: interviews, quotes, talks, podcasts | Journalists and hosts decide | Your time | You cannot control whether, when or how it runs. |

What it costs
What pushing down a result costs, from 3,886 priced outlets
The unit cost of suppression is a placement. The table shows list-price budgets for 3, 5 and 10 placements at each authority level in the Essentras catalog on 14 Oct 2026: the 25th percentile × count (low) to the 75th percentile × count (high), with the median × count below.
Placement budgets by authority (all regions, any link policy)
| Authority | Outlets | 3 placements | 5 placements | 10 placements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Any authority | 3,886 | $2,256 to $12,780median $6,501 | $3,760 to $21,300median $10,835 | $7,520 to $42,600median $21,670 |
| DA 50+ | 3,457 | $2,409 to $13,932median $6,501 | $4,015 to $23,220median $10,835 | $8,030 to $46,440median $21,670 |
| DA 70+ | 1,776 | $4,788 to $27,063median $9,999 | $7,980 to $45,105median $16,665 | $15,960 to $90,210median $33,330 |
| DA 80+ | 776 | $6,489 to $43,719median $14,670 | $10,815 to $72,865median $24,450 | $21,630 to $145,730median $48,900 |
Placements at DA 50+ by region
| Region | Outlets | Middle half | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| North America | 1,344 | $631 to $3,333 | $2,167 |
| Europe | 1,126 | $1,283 to $9,085 | $3,507 |
| Asia Pacific | 417 | $387 to $1,925 | $737 |
| Latin America | 265 | $1,343 to $4,409 | $2,257 |
| Oceania | 68 | $2,500 to $3,637 | $3,637 |
| Global | 89 | $417 to $2,380 | $1,100 |
| Africa | 68 | $996 to $2,380 | $1,470 |
| Middle East | 47 | $2,178 to $5,000 | $3,333 |
No formula says how many pages it takes to outrank a result. These are budgets for a number you choose, not quotes, and the 3 counts are examples, not a recommendation. Below 10 matching outlets a quartile says little, so such cells are marked instead of priced.
The other costs

What this estimate does not cover
- Legal fees: lawyer letters, lawsuits and court orders.
- Any outcome. Google, platforms, publishers and courts decide.
- Timelines: Google publishes none for most removal requests.
- Your own time: replies to reviews, profiles, your website.
- Crisis PR and ongoing press work beyond the placements you budget.
What the estimator uses
- Each item you enter is priced at the Essentras list price for that item.
- Reviews use the cheapest mix of the 1, 3, 5 and 10 review prices for the exact number you enter.
- Items that need a free check first (articles marked “not sure”, a Wikipedia page) count in the high end only.
- Placements: your number × the 25th percentile (low), median and 75th percentile (high) list price of matching catalog outlets.
- Monitoring: $0 on the free plan to $49 a month on Pro. First year = one-time + 12 × monthly.
- Market bands: monthly figures × 12. No multiplier for name competitiveness, because no data supports one.

How long it takes
How long it takes: 3 clocks, and only 2 can be stated in advance
We found no published, measured timeline for suppression, so this page gives none. Here is what each step takes, with its source, and what drives the rest.
1. Publishing
Outlets list their own turnaround. In our catalog, 1,037 of the 1,541 outlets that list one publish within 7 days (14 Oct 2026); most outlets at DA 50 and above list none. Your own pages go live when you publish them.
Essentras catalog
2. Crawling and indexing
Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and that requesting a crawl does not guarantee a page will be included quickly, or at all.
Google Search Central, updated 10 Dec 2025
3. Ranking
Nobody can state this in advance. Google says nobody can pay it to rank a page higher, and it does not guarantee to serve any page.
Google Search Central; Google, How Search Works
What makes ranking slower or faster
- How strong the negative result is: a story on an established news site is harder to outrank than a thin page on a little-known site.
- How many results you need to move, and how many strong pages about you already exist.
- How common the name is: a shared name competes with other people for the same page 1.
- How specific the search is: your name with your city or company can behave very differently from your name alone.
- Whether the new pages are genuinely about you and useful: thin or copied pages may never be indexed.
Anyone who promises page 1 by a date is selling something Google says nobody can buy.
What fails
What does not work, and what breaks the rules
These tactics still appear in push-down advice and offers. Each one either breaks a published rule or works against you.
| Tactic | Why it fails | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Buying links to push your pages up | Google’s spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes, including paid articles with links that pass ranking credit, as link spam. Paid links are fine only when marked rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". | Google spam policies, updated 28 Aug 2026 |
| Mass-producing pages about your name | Google calls many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings scaled content abuse, and says sites that violate its policies may rank lower or not appear at all. | Google spam policies, updated 28 Aug 2026 |
| Putting third-party pages on a strong site mainly to borrow its rankings | Google’s site reputation policy covers third-party content published on a host site mainly because of that host’s ranking signals. | Google spam policies, updated 28 Aug 2026 |
| Comment and forum spam under your name | Google lists forum comments with optimized links in the post or signature as link spam. | Google spam policies, updated 28 Aug 2026 |
| Fake reviews, fake profiles or a fake “independent” review site | The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in force since 21 Oct 2024, bans fake reviews and company-controlled review sites that claim independence. Courts can impose up to $53,088 per violation for knowing violations. | FTC rule Q&A; 16 CFR 1.98 |
| Threatening the publisher or a reviewer | Under the same rule, a groundless legal threat, intimidation or a knowingly false public accusation used to get a review removed is review suppression. | 16 CFR 465.7 |
| Paying for a promised position or date | Google says nobody can pay it to rank a page higher, and it does not guarantee it will crawl, index or serve any page. | Google Search Central, updated 18 Dec 2025 |

Is pushing down results legal?
Yes, when what you publish is accurate. What breaks the law or platform rules is deception: fake reviews, fake profiles, fake “independent” review sites, undisclosed insider reviews and threats used to get reviews taken down.
Measure progress
How to measure progress: the audit sheet
Measure the same way every time, or the numbers mean nothing. Google tailors results to location, Search history and settings, so control what you can.
- Search in a private window, signed out, on the same kind of device and from the same city each time.
- Search every variant from your audit: your name alone, with your city, with your company, and with words such as “reviews” or “complaints”.
- Record the first 20 results: position, URL, owner, type and tone. Note image, video and news results on page 1 too.
- Check monthly, and log what you published or filed that month, so you can see what moved what.
- Log every removal request: URL, route, date filed and outcome.
- Set a Google Alert for your name so new pages reach you as they appear, not months later.
Audit sheet columns
Paste these into the first row of a spreadsheet, then add 1 row per result, per search, per month.
- 1Date checked
- 2Search used
- 3Position
- 4URL
- 5Site owner
- 6Kind of page (news, review, profile, forum, record, your own)
- 7Tone (negative, neutral, positive)
- 8Route (source, Google policy, law, suppression)

Pushing down results and AI answers
AI assistants such as ChatGPT build their answers about a name from what is published about it. The same work changes both: removal where a rule allows it, and accurate pages that are easy to find. Nobody controls the answers themselves.

FAQ
Pushing down negative search results: questions and answers
How do you push down negative search results?▾
Publish and promote accurate pages about you that can outrank the result for the same search: your own site, complete public profiles, a Knowledge Panel where Google shows one, and articles on established outlets. Measure monthly. Check removal first, because a result that breaks Google’s policies or the law can be removed instead of outranked.
How long does it take to push down a negative search result?▾
Nobody can say in advance. Publishing can be quick: 1,037 of the 1,541 outlets in our catalog that list a turnaround publish within 7 days. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and ranking depends on how strong the negative result is. Be wary of anyone who promises a date.
How much does it cost to push down negative search results?▾
Your own pages and profiles cost time, not money. Placements in the Essentras catalog list at $752 to $4,260 each for the middle half of 3,886 outlets (median $2,167, 14 Oct 2026), and $1,596 to $9,021 at DA 70+. Managed programs run about $1,500 to $10,000 a month (Everything-PR, October 2026). Nobody can promise rankings.
How many positive pages do I need to push a result off page 1?▾
No formula exists, so treat any fixed number as a guess. It depends on how strong the negative result is, how many strong pages about you already exist and how common your name is. Budget a number of pages you can count, measure monthly and adjust.
Does pushing down search results still work in 2026?▾
It can, when the new pages are accurate, genuinely about you and on sites Google indexes. Google’s spam policies, updated 28 Aug 2026, say sites that buy links for ranking, mass-produce pages or place third-party pages on strong sites mainly to borrow their rankings may rank lower or not appear at all. Those shortcuts work against you.
What is the difference between removal, de-indexing and suppression?▾
Removal means the site deletes or changes the page. De-indexing means Google stops showing it in results while the page stays online. Suppression removes nothing: other pages outrank the result. Removal and de-indexing need a platform rule or a law that applies; suppression is the route for lawful content.
What happens if I stop working on it?▾
The pages you published stay published, but nothing was removed. If the pages above the negative result lose ground, it can move back up. Keep your own pages current and repeat the audit on a schedule.
Do social media profiles help push down results?▾
Complete, public profiles on established platforms can rank for a name, and they are free, so they come first. They help only when they use your name the way people search it and stay active. None is guaranteed to rank.
Do press releases help push down negative results?▾
A press release can create pages that mention you, but Google’s spam policies list optimized links in press releases distributed on other sites as link spam. The useful part is an accurate page that can rank for your name, not the link.
Can a Knowledge Panel or a Wikipedia page help?▾
A Knowledge Panel is Google’s own box for a name, and Google generates it and decides whether it appears. Wikipedia covers only notable subjects, and paid editors must disclose who pays them. Essentras charges $650 for a person panel and $4,000 for a Wikipedia page, refunded if the panel does not go live or the page is not published.
Is it legal to push down negative search results?▾
Yes, when what you publish is accurate. Fake reviews, fake profiles, company-controlled “independent” review sites and threats used to get reviews removed break the FTC’s rule in force since 21 Oct 2024. Courts can impose civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation for knowing violations.
Can I push down negative results myself?▾
Yes. The audit, your own site, your profiles and Google’s removal tools cost nothing. Paid help earns its fee when you need placements on outlets you cannot reach, entity work such as a Knowledge Panel, or a removal case that needs evidence work.
Will pushing down results change what AI assistants say about me?▾
It can, because AI assistants build answers from what is published about a name, but nobody controls their answers. Check them before and after: the Essentras AI Visibility Tracker has a free plan, and Pro is $49 a month.
