Home address removal

How to remove your home address from the internet

The short answer

Opt out of the people-search sites that list your address, add every address you have used to Google’s Results about you and request removal of the matching results, ask Google and Apple to blur your house in street imagery, and ask other sites to delete it. Property and voter records stay public at the source.

The plan

The plan: 8 steps to remove your home address from the internet

Start with the sites that copy your address, then Google, then the imagery and records. Each step links to the section with the details.

  1. 01Search for your addressIn a private window, search your name with your city, your street address in quotes, and your name with your phone number. Note every URL that shows your address, old addresses included.
  2. 02Opt out of people-search sitesUse each operator’s own opt-out page, starting with those that run many sites, and log the date and the confirmation.
  3. 03Add your addresses to Results about youEnter your current and past home addresses exactly as pages show them, then request removal of each matching result.
  4. 04Use Google’s removal form for the restFor pages Results about you does not catch, or where your address sits next to threats, submit the URL through Google’s removal request form.
  5. 05Ask for a blur of your houseOn Google Street View, open the image and use Report a problem. For Apple Look Around, email Apple’s image collection team.
  6. 06Ask other sites to delete itDirectories, forums and old listings: write to the site owner, then its hosting company if there is no answer, and refresh Google once the address is gone.
  7. 07Deal with public recordsProperty and voter records stay at the source. If you are at risk, apply to your state’s address confidentiality program; in the UK, opt out of the open register.
  8. 08Re-check after every moveNew records create new listings. Re-check at least every 4 months and right after you move.

Checklist

  • I listed every page that shows my current or past address
  • I opted out of the big people-search operators (tracker below)
  • Results about you has every address I have used, exactly as pages show them
  • I used Google’s removal form for anything Results about you missed
  • I asked Google, and Apple if needed, to blur my house
  • I wrote to the other sites, and refreshed Google once they acted
  • I opted out of the open register (UK) or applied to a confidentiality program, if it fits
  • My next re-check date is in my calendar

Where your address comes from

Your address reaches the internet from 7 places, and you can switch off 4 of them

An address spreads from records and sign-ups to the sites that copy them. The FTC says people-search sites draw on public records such as property, voter and court records. Knowing the source tells you whether it can come off.

Key facts, with sources

Google

Google can remove results that show your home address: add every address to Results about you

Home addresses are on Google’s private info list. Results about you checks Google for the addresses you enter and lets you request removal of each match; the removal request form covers the same for any URL.

  • Add your current address and every past address. Google says to enter details exactly as they appear on the result, an old address included.
  • Request removal of each match from the To review tab.
  • From any result, signed in: More, then Remove result, then It shows my personal info and I don’t want it there, then Contact Info.
  • 1 type of contact info per request is enough, even if the page also shows your phone number.
  • Expect no Remove result option for government, educational, newspaper or business websites.
  • An approved removal sometimes hides the page only for searches with your name.

The full walkthrough: how to remove personal information from Google

Street View blur

Google Street View and Apple Look Around blur your house on request, and the blur is permanent

Both companies blur faces and license plates automatically. A house needs a request.

Google Street View

  1. 1Open Google Maps and find your home in Street View.
  2. 2Select Report a problem, in the bottom right.
  3. 3Complete the form, saying you want your house blurred, and submit it.
  4. 4Google says it applies the blur to all copies of the published image, and that once a blurred image is published the blur cannot be removed.
  5. 5If you gave an email address in the form, Google may contact you for more information or with an update.

Apple Look Around

Apple says you can ask for a face, a license plate or your own house to be blurred by emailing [email protected].

Photos uploaded by other people are the photographer’s responsibility. If such a photo shows your home and breaks Google Maps policy, report it through the same Report a problem link.

Public records

Property, voter and court records stay public at the source, but you can limit where they spread

Public records are the raw material people-search sites draw on. Google, brokers and removal services cannot delete them at the county or the court.

Property records (U.S.)

Kept by the county. The FTC says opting out of people-search sites does not delete public records, and California’s DROP lets brokers keep real estate ownership records as exempt data.

FTC: what to know about people search sites (July 2022)

Voter records (U.S.)

Voting records are also exempt from DROP. Some states let people in an address confidentiality program register as confidential voters; California’s Safe at Home does.

California Secretary of State: Safe at Home

Court records

Ask the court or a lawyer about sealing or redaction. Google gives strong weight to government-published pages, so the change has to happen at the source.

Google Legal Help: right to be forgotten overview

The electoral register (UK)

Opt out of the open register, the version anyone can buy, through the register to vote service or your electoral registration office. Your name and address stay on the full register, which has restricted uses, unless you register anonymously.

GOV.UK: opt out of the open register

Company directors (UK)

Companies House says home addresses and full dates of birth are not published on its register. Directors, LLP members and people with significant control who are at serious risk of violence or intimidation because of the company’s activities can apply to protect a home address from credit reference agencies; the fee is £100.

Doxxing

If someone posted your address to threaten or harass you, report it as doxxing

Google’s doxxing policy covers pages that combine your details with explicit or implicit threats, calls for others to harm or harass you, or a large amount of aggregated personal information with no legitimate purpose.

  1. 1If you are in danger, call 911 in the U.S., 999 in the UK or your local emergency number.
  2. 2Save the page and the threatening text, with dates.
  3. 3Report the post to the platform under its harassment rules.
  4. 4Submit the URL through Google’s removal request form, say that the page shows threatening intent, and quote the threatening line.
  5. 5If the site does not act, report it to its hosting company.

If you are at risk

If you are being stalked, harassed or abused, put safety first

In immediate danger, call 911 in the U.S., 999 in the UK, or your local emergency number.

Removing information can help, but it is 1 part of a safety plan, not the plan. If someone is threatening you, consider talking to an advocate first, especially before you change things the other person could notice.

Safety routes that go further than an opt-out

  • Address confidentiality programs

Many U.S. states run programs that give survivors of domestic and sexual violence and stalking a substitute address. California’s Safe at Home provides a substitute mailing address accepted by state, county and city agencies, and lets participants register as confidential voters.

NNEDV Safety Net: address confidentiality programs

  • Safety suppression at records companies

LexisNexis Risk Solutions accepts requests to suppress records in its restricted public records products when your safety is at risk, with documentation such as a court protective order, a police report, or a letter from a shelter administrator or health care professional. It decides which documents qualify.

  • Doxxing and intimate images on Google

Google’s policies cover results that pair your details with threats or calls to harass you, and sexual images shared without consent. Report the page to the site and its host too.

A new address

Keep a new address off the internet from the day you move

The best time to protect an address is before it spreads.

  • Give a mailing address that is not your home when a form does not need your home address. People at risk can get a substitute address through an address confidentiality program.
  • Leave your address off social profiles, listings and public posts, and check the location settings of apps you use.
  • Add the new address to Results about you so Google alerts you to new results.
  • California residents: update your DROP profile with your new ZIP code, phone number and email; updates are allowed once every 45 days.
  • UK residents: opt out of the open register when you register to vote at the new address.
  • Re-check the big people-search sites after you move: the FTC says changed public records can bring your information back.

Do it yourself or pay

Doing it yourself is free; subscriptions repeat broker opt-outs; Essentras handles the whole case

For an address, most of the work is people-search opt-outs, which you can do yourself or pay a subscription to repeat. Google requests, blur requests and records questions cost nothing.

FAQ

Removing your home address from the internet: FAQ

Can I completely remove my home address from the internet?▾

Not completely. Property and voter records stay public at the source in most places, and copies can sit on sites you never find. You can remove the copies that are easiest to find: people-search listings, Google results that show your address, and your house in street imagery. If you are at risk, an address confidentiality program can keep a new address out of many records.

How do I remove my address from Google?▾

Add your current and past addresses to Google’s Results about you, then request removal of each result that shows them. For pages it does not catch, use Google’s removal request form. Google removes the result, not the page, so also ask the site to delete your address, then use Refresh Outdated Content.

How do I get my house blurred on Google Street View?▾

Open your home in Street View on Google Maps, select Report a problem, ask Google to blur your house and submit the form. Google says it applies the blur to all copies of that published image, and that a blur cannot be removed once published. For Apple Look Around, email [email protected].

Can I remove my address from property records?▾

Usually not. Property records are public records kept by the county, and the FTC says opting out of people-search sites does not delete public records; California’s DROP also lets brokers keep real estate ownership records. If you are at risk, ask an advocate about your state’s address confidentiality program.

How do I remove my address from Whitepages, Spokeo and other people-search sites?▾

Use each site’s own opt-out page. Spokeo asks for the URL of each listing and an email confirmation, says requests are processed in 24 to 48 hours, and its California registration says the opt-out covers its public sites except ThatsThem.com. Whitepages and most others blocked our visit, so check their pages for current steps; our internet guide lists the page each named in its registration.

Why does my address keep showing up after I removed it?▾

New public records create new listings, sometimes under a new URL, and your address can appear in relatives’ or neighbors’ reports. The FTC says information can reappear when public records change. Re-check at least every 4 months and after every move, and keep Results about you notifications on.

Someone posted my address to threaten me. What should I do?▾

If you are in danger, call 911 in the U.S. or 999 in the UK. Save the page and the threats with dates, report the post to the platform, and submit the URL through Google’s removal form as doxxing, quoting the threatening line. In the U.S., VictimConnect (call or text 855-484-2846) can help you plan next steps; if the person is a partner or ex-partner, so can the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233).

Is there a program that keeps my address confidential?▾

Many U.S. states run address confidentiality programs for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and stalking; NNEDV’s Safety Net keeps a state-by-state table. California’s Safe at Home, for example, gives participants a substitute mailing address that state, county and city agencies accept, and lets them register as confidential voters.

How do I keep my address off the internet in the UK?▾

Opt out of the open register, which anyone can buy, through the register to vote service or your electoral registration office. Use Google’s Results about you or removal form for search results, and send an erasure request under the UK GDPR to sites that publish your address. Company directors can read Companies House’s guidance on protecting their details.

How much does it cost to remove my address from the internet?▾

Doing it yourself is free: opt-outs, Google’s tools and blur requests cost nothing. Subscription services that repeat broker opt-outs listed entry plans from $19.99 to $129 a year on 18 Oct 2026. Essentras prices address and personal information removal per case after a free scan, and nobody can promise what a site or Google will decide.

What we could not verify, so this page does not rely on it

  • The opt-out steps of most people-search sites: they blocked our visit, so the tracker links the page each operator named in its California registration.
  • How any real-estate listing site handles requests to remove photos of a home: we did not check any, so this page does not describe a process.
  • Which records your state’s address confidentiality program covers: programs differ by state, and NNEDV’s table was last updated in March 2023.
