WhatsApp account bans

WhatsApp number banned: how to request a review

If WhatsApp banned your number, open WhatsApp and tap Request review on the ban screen. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours and it notifies you in the app. If no Request review option appears, WhatsApp says the ban is final. Only WhatsApp can lift a ban, so no third-party unban service can.

Checked on 19 Oct 2026 against 22 WhatsApp and Meta pages, including Meta’s Business Platform help and developer pages. Full source list

What you will do

  • Read the exact message on your screen and match it to the right route.
  • Request a review the official way, for the right number.
  • Use Meta’s separate appeal if you run the WhatsApp Business Platform (API).
  • Keep customers reachable and your links updated while you wait.
  • Spot unban scams and avoid the mistakes that make a ban stick.

Start here in 1 click

Find the message or situation you have, then open the official page in 1 click. Every route below is WhatsApp’s or Meta’s own.

Banned, temporarily banned or restricted: read the exact message first

WhatsApp shows a different message for each problem, and only a ban offers a review. Temporary bans and restrictions end when you change what caused them or when the time runs out.

Temporary or permanent? WhatsApp’s own wording is narrower than most guides suggest. Its Messaging Guidelines list temporarily or permanently suspending an account among the actions it may take, while its help pages use “Temporarily banned” only for unofficial apps and scraping. A ban with a review option lasts until a review lifts it. A ban without a review option is final.

The countdown some guides describe belongs to restrictions, not bans: WhatsApp shows the time left on a restriction when you try to start a chat with a new contact. Its ban page describes no timer.

Why WhatsApp bans numbers, in its own words

  • Spam, scams or activity that puts users’ safety at risk. WhatsApp says it bans accounts when it believes the activity breaks its Terms of Service.Source: WhatsApp Help Center
  • Messages people did not ask for. The responsible-use page lists unwanted messages, bulk or automated messaging, auto-dialing, contact lists that are not yours and over-used broadcast lists, and says WhatsApp bans accounts that are reported multiple times.Source: WhatsApp Help Center
  • Unofficial apps and modified versions of WhatsApp, or linking your account to them.Source: WhatsApp Help Center[1][2]
  • Scraping: the automated collection of phone numbers, profile photos or statuses.Source: WhatsApp Help Center
  • A recycled number: the previous owner of a new number may have broken the terms, and the ban shows up for you.Source: WhatsApp Help Center
  • For unwanted automated messages, WhatsApp says it uses machine learning and reports from users to detect and ban accounts. Its guidelines add that automation decides cases highly likely to break the rules, and human review teams make the final call on cases that need further review.Source: WhatsApp Help Center; WhatsApp

Unofficial apps are the most fixable cause

WhatsApp names GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp, TeleMessage and TM WhatsApp as examples of unofficial apps. Remove all of them before you register in the official app, and know that a chat backup made in an unofficial app may not transfer. WhatsApp also says it can reinstate a ban if the activity continues.

How to request a review of a banned WhatsApp number

The review is the only route WhatsApp documents for a banned number: it starts on the ban screen, covers 1 number per request, and its decision arrives as a WhatsApp notification.

Source: WhatsApp Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2]

Request a review, step by step

  1. Open WhatsApp on the phone with the banned number

Use the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. The ban message appears when you open it and names the number.

  2. Check that the message offers a review

Look for the line saying you can request a review of this number, and a Request review option. Without that option, WhatsApp says the ban is final.

  3. Tap Request review

Submit the request from the app. WhatsApp’s pages do not describe a text field; if your screen shows a field, keep it short and factual (texts below).

  4. Wait for the notification

WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours and that a WhatsApp notification brings the decision. Open WhatsApp to check the status.

  5. Leave the request alone while it runs

Do not write to WhatsApp from another account or chase the request elsewhere: WhatsApp says this does not speed up the review or change the decision.

  6. If it is lifted, verify the number and secure it

The app shows “This account can now use WhatsApp”. Enter your phone number to verify, restore your backup, then turn on two-step verification and add an email address.

WhatsApp Business app and Business Platform bans work differently

The WhatsApp Business app appeals like a personal number, from the ban screen. The WhatsApp Business Platform, the API businesses use through Meta or a solution provider, runs on Meta’s policy enforcement: warnings, timed blocks and appeals in Business Support Home.

Appeal a Business Platform restriction in Business Support Home

  1. Open Business Support Home

Go to Business Support Home from Meta Business Suite or Business Manager, then click View my accounts under My accounts.

  2. Find the business portfolio

Scroll to the business portfolio linked to the WhatsApp Business account. Meta says it may show Assets restricted.

  3. Open the WhatsApp account

In the WhatsApp accounts section, open the account marked Account issues or Account disabled.

  4. Read the violation

In the Available for review tab of Activity issues, click the policy issue, then See details: the policy, any active restriction, what happens if it repeats and how to resolve it.

  5. Request a review

Click Request review, select an appeal reason, add details if you want (text below) and click Submit.

  6. Track it in the In review tab

Meta says the decision may reverse the issue, and that a reversed issue returns the account to its previous status.

Meta notes that not all spam violations can be appealed: sometimes the only route is to wait for the restriction to end. Keep the admin details in Business Manager current, because violation emails go to every admin.

Only WhatsApp can lift a ban: how to spot unban scams

WhatsApp’s own ban page says third-party services cannot ban an account or remove a ban; only WhatsApp can. Anyone who sells an unban, or asks for your code, is selling something that does not exist.

Red flags, and what to do

Scammers watch for people who post about bans. The FTC’s rule for anyone who contacts you unexpectedly and wants a fee first to get back what you lost: it is a scam.

Red flags

  • Says they can remove the ban, or have a contact inside WhatsApp or Meta.
  • Asks for your 6-digit registration code or your two-step verification PIN. WhatsApp says never to share the code, not even with friends or family.
  • Wants payment first in gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer or a payment app. The FTC says only scammers insist on these.
  • Asks you to install an app, a modified WhatsApp such as GB WhatsApp, or a remote-access tool.
  • Contacts you first, in a group, a comment or another chat app, after you mention the ban.
  • Offers to message WhatsApp for you from other accounts. WhatsApp says that changes nothing.

What to do

  • Do not reply or pay. Block and report the sender in WhatsApp if they contacted you there.
  • If you already shared your registration code, re-register your number with a new 6-digit code at once. WhatsApp says this logs every other device out of your account.
  • Once you are back in, turn on two-step verification and add an email address.
  • In the US, report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to your state attorney general, as the FTC advises.

A hijacked account is not a banned account

If someone took over your number, recover it first by re-registering with the 6-digit code. WhatsApp warns that reporting the compromised account you are trying to recover may get it banned for breaking the terms, and you could lose access or data.

Keep the business reachable while the number is banned

A banned number cannot send or receive WhatsApp messages until a review lifts the ban, and a final ban does not lift. Move customers to a channel that does not depend on WhatsApp, tell them where to find you, and update every link that still opens the old chat.

Source: WhatsApp Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026

Set up a backup channel that is not another WhatsApp account

  • WhatsApp’s terms say that if it disables or suspends your account, you agree not to create another account without its permission. Registering a fresh number to get around the ban risks the same outcome.Source: WhatsApp[1][2]
  • Use channels customers already have: a phone line, email, SMS, your website’s contact form or chat, and your Instagram or Facebook messages.

Tell customers where to find you

  • Post the change where customers look first: a banner on your website, a post on your Google Business Profile and social profiles, and an email or SMS to customers who agreed to hear from you.
  • Add a warning that you will never ask for payment or codes from a new WhatsApp number. Scammers copy businesses that go quiet.
  • Brief your team with 1 script, so every customer hears the same answer.
  • When the number is back, say so in the same places.

Update every link that opens the old chat

  • Click-to-chat links (wa.me) and QR codes on your website, menus, packaging, receipts and printed materials.
  • WhatsApp buttons on Instagram and Facebook profiles, and ads that click to WhatsApp.
  • The phone number and chat links on your Google Business Profile, map listings and directories.
  • Email signatures, invoices, autoresponders, and chatbot or CRM integrations that send to WhatsApp.
  • Switch the links back only after WhatsApp shows “This account can now use WhatsApp”.Source: WhatsApp Help Center

Mistakes that make a WhatsApp ban worse

Most of these happen in the first panicked hour. Each breaks a rule WhatsApp states, or costs time a review cannot give back.

  1. Installing an unofficial or “unban” app. Unofficial apps are a stated cause of bans, and WhatsApp can reinstate a ban if the activity continues.Source: WhatsApp Help Center
  2. Reinstalling WhatsApp or switching phones to clear the ban. The ban message names the phone number, not the device.Source: WhatsApp Help Center

FAQ

WhatsApp ban questions, answered

How long does a WhatsApp ban review take?▾

WhatsApp’s ban message says most reviews are completed within 24 hours, and a WhatsApp notification brings the decision. For the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta’s help center says reviews typically take 24 hours and its developer documentation says 24 to 48 hours. No page promises a time for every case.

Is a WhatsApp ban permanent?▾

A ban with a Request review option lasts until a review lifts it. If no Request review option appears, WhatsApp says the ban is final and cannot be appealed. “Temporarily banned” is a different message, linked to unofficial apps or scraping, and a restriction ends by itself when its time runs out.

Can I contact WhatsApp support to get unbanned?▾

The documented route is Request review on the ban screen. WhatsApp lists Contact Us in the app (Settings, Help, Contact Us) and a web form for questions, but says contacting it outside the review does not speed it up or change the decision. Its EEA terms add [email protected] for suspensions believed to be in error.

Can anyone else unban my WhatsApp number?▾

No. WhatsApp’s help page says third-party services cannot ban your account or remove a ban; only WhatsApp can. Someone can help you write a clear request, but the decision is WhatsApp’s alone. Never give anyone your 6-digit registration code or your two-step verification PIN.

Why was my new WhatsApp number banned?▾

WhatsApp says the previous owner of a new number may have broken its terms, which caused the ban. Request a review from the app and say when the number became yours and that you had never used it on WhatsApp. Each request covers 1 phone number.

Will I lose my WhatsApp chats if my number is banned?▾

While the number is banned you cannot open your chat history or backups. WhatsApp says a backup becomes accessible again only after the phone number tied to it is unbanned, so keep the backup and do not delete it while the review runs.

What happens to Meta Verified on a banned WhatsApp Business account?▾

WhatsApp says a banned account automatically loses its Meta Verified subscription. If the ban came from breaking the Meta Verified for Business terms, the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy or the Meta Commerce Policy, the subscription is canceled and no refund is available.

How do I appeal a WhatsApp Business API ban?▾

Platform bans are handled by Meta, not WhatsApp Support. In Business Support Home open the restricted WhatsApp account, select the policy issue under Available for review, click Request review, choose a reason and submit. Meta says violations can be appealed within 90 days of the notice.

What does “Temporarily banned” mean on WhatsApp?▾

WhatsApp says the message can mean you are using an unofficial version of WhatsApp or collecting information by scraping. Switch to the official app or stop scraping: WhatsApp warns that otherwise the account might be permanently banned.

Can I register a new WhatsApp number instead?▾

WhatsApp’s terms say that if it disables or suspends your account, you agree not to create another account without its permission. While the review runs, use a channel outside WhatsApp, such as a phone line, email or your website, and tell customers where to find you.
