Instagram account recovery
Can you recover a deleted Instagram account?
Only while the deletion is pending. Instagram says a profile and all its information are permanently deleted 30 days after the deletion request, and the number of days you can cancel varies by region. Log back in before then to cancel. A deactivated account returns when you log in. Once deletion is complete, Meta says it cannot be restored.
What you will do
- Tell deactivated, pending deletion, deleted and disabled apart, because from outside they all look the same.
- Cancel a pending deletion, or bring back a deactivated account, inside Meta’s window.
- Save your photos and data before the window closes, or ask Meta for a copy if you cannot log in.
- Take the hacked-account route first if someone else asked Instagram to delete your account.
- See what is gone for good, and what you can rebuild: the same email, and maybe the same username.

Deactivated, pending deletion, deleted or disabled: only your login screen tells them apart
From another account all 4 look the same: the profile is gone. Meta says a deactivated profile’s photos, comments and likes are hidden, content waiting for deletion is not accessible to other people, and a disabled account is no longer visible to others. What you see when you log in is what separates them.
Source: Instagram Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2][3]| State | How it starts | When you log in | Can you undo it? | Time limit Meta states |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deactivated | You chose Deactivate account in Accounts Center. Meta says you must be able to log in to do it. | Logging back in reactivates the account. | Yes, by logging back in. | None stated. You can deactivate only once a week.Source: Instagram Help Center |
| Deletion pending | You, or someone with your password, chose Delete account. | Meta does not describe the screen. Its export page calls the state Scheduled for deletion and says you can cancel the deletion. | Yes, inside the window. | 30 days after the request; the days you can cancel vary by region.Source: Instagram Help Center[1][2][3] |
| Deleted | The window passed without a cancellation. | Meta does not describe what the login screen shows. | No. Meta says there is no way to restore it. | Permanent. The process can take up to 90 days to finish.Source: Instagram Help Center[1][2] |
| Disabled | Meta disabled it for not following the Community Standards (or, in some regions, for an age range under local law). | A message telling you the account is disabled. | Sometimes: if you think it was a mistake, ask for a review by following the on-screen instructions. | The general Instagram page we read states none.Source: Instagram Help Center |
If no disabled message appears and you still cannot log in, Meta lists 3 possible causes: a login issue, someone else gaining access, or a deletion by you or by someone with your password. Rule out the first 2 before you assume the account is gone. Instagram’s I Can’t Log In hub has no section for deleted accounts.
Source: Instagram Help Center[1][2]Meta’s pages say 2 things that sound opposite
The disabled-accounts page says a deleted account cannot be restored. The deletion page says a profile is permanently deleted 30 days after the request, and the export page says a profile scheduled for deletion can still be cancelled. Read together: a pending deletion can be cancelled, a completed deletion cannot.

Meta is moving people to Meta Accounts, so your app may show Accounts Center or Meta Account settings. These are the paths on Meta’s own pages, read on 19 Oct 2026. The labels are Meta’s, in English.

Meta’s own pages disagree in places. The Android version of the deletion page says to use Instagram.com on a computer or mobile browser to delete a profile, then lists in-app steps. The deactivation page heads its deactivation steps “To permanently delete your profile”. Deactivate account and Delete account sit on the same screen, so read the button before you tap.
Cancel a pending deletion by logging back in before the window closes
Instagram’s deletion page confirms a cancellation window that varies by region, and its export page says a profile scheduled for deletion can be cancelled, but neither lists the cancel steps. Meta spells them out for Facebook and Threads: log back in, then confirm. Meta’s AI support assistant gives the same answer for Instagram.

1. Work out your last day
Count 30 days from the day the deletion was requested. Meta says the days you can cancel vary by region, so treat that date as the latest possible day, not your target.
2. Use a phone or computer you have used before
Open the Instagram app or instagram.com on a device you normally use. Meta says its systems recognise the device you usually use and familiar locations.
3. Log in with your username and password
If the password no longer works, someone else may have changed it: switch to the hacked-account route below while the window is still open.
4. Confirm that you want to keep the account
Follow the prompt Instagram shows. Instagram’s article does not name the button. On Facebook it is Cancel deletion, and on Threads you tap Log in to confirm the cancellation.
5. Check the profile is back, then save a copy
Ask a friend to look for your profile, or check it from another account. Then request an export of your information, because a profile scheduled for deletion cannot be exported.
Do not wait for day 30
Meta gives no time of day for the cutoff and says the window varies by region. If your login fails close to the end, there is no time left for the hacked-account route, which can include an identity check for which Meta states no review time.
Source: Instagram Help Center[1][2]Bring back a deactivated account
Deactivation is the reversible state. Meta says your photos, comments and likes stay hidden until you reactivate the account by logging back in, that you must be able to log in to deactivate in the first place, and that you can deactivate only once a week. If logging in fails, treat it as a login problem or a hacked account, not as a deletion.
Source: Instagram Help CenterThe Accounts Center route Meta documents for Facebook
Facebook’s reactivation page describes a Reactivation option in Accounts Center, under Account ownership and control, shown only when a profile or account is deactivated or scheduled for deletion, and says a deactivated Facebook account can be reactivated from Instagram’s Accounts Center. Meta does not say the reverse works for Instagram: worth a look in a logged-in Facebook app, not a promise.
Source: Facebook Help CenterDeletion window tracker
Use it when a deletion was requested and you need every date in 1 place.
DELETION WINDOW TRACKER: Instagram @[username] Deletion requested on: [date] (by me / not by me) Day 30 after the request: [date] (Meta: the days to cancel vary by region) My own deadline to log in and cancel: [a date well before day 30] Logged back in and cancelled on: [date] Profile visible again, checked from another account: [yes / no] Export requested on: [date] (Meta: the link can take up to 30 days) Export ready on: [date] (download within 4 days) Downloaded and stored in: [place]
Save your photos and data first: export your information while you can still log in
Meta suggests exporting a copy before you delete, because after deletion you lose access to the Export your information tool. 2 limits catch people out: a profile scheduled for deletion cannot be exported until you cancel, and an export link can take up to 30 days to arrive.
Source: Instagram Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2]How to export your Instagram information to your phone
1. Open your profile, then Menu
Tap Profile or your profile picture at the bottom right, then Menu at the top right.
2. Open Your information and permissions
Tap Meta Account, then Your information and permissions. Accounts that have not moved to Meta Accounts yet show Accounts Center instead.
3. Create an export
Tap Export your information, then Create export, and select the profile you want to export.
4. Choose Export to device and your options
Tap Next, select Export to device, then pick the information, the date range, the format, the notification email and the media quality. Tap Start export.
5. Download it within 4 days
Meta says it can take up to 30 days to email you the link. Once the export is ready, you have 4 days to download it from Available downloads in the same tool.

Exporting to an external service instead copies the original media you shared, Meta says, and asks for the profile’s password during setup. High-quality video makes any export much larger, so check your storage first.
Source: Instagram Help CenterIf you cannot log in: ask Meta for a copy
Meta’s export page says that if you cannot access your Instagram account and still want a copy of your information, you can contact Meta. The link goes to Meta’s privacy rights request page, which asks you to log in or offers a route for people who have trouble accessing their account. Meta does not say how long such a request takes or what it returns.
Source: Instagram Help Center; InstagramRequest for a copy of your information when you cannot log in
Use it when you cannot reach the export tool. Paste it only into Meta’s own form, never into a message from a stranger.
I am the owner of the Instagram account @[username] and I cannot log in to it. I would like a copy of my information from this account. Account details: - Username: @[username] - Email or phone number used to sign up: [email or phone] - Approximate month and year the account was created: [month, year] - What happened: [I requested deletion on (date) / someone else requested deletion / I lost access on (date)] Please reply to this secure email address that only I can open: [email]
Someone else deleted your Instagram: recover access first, then cancel inside the window
Meta’s disabled-accounts page lists a deletion by someone with your password as a reason you cannot log in. The route is the hacked-account flow: get back in, cancel the deletion, then lock the account down. Meta documents no separate form for a deletion an attacker requested.
Source: Instagram Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2]How to get back in after someone else requested the deletion
1. Look for an email from Instagram
If an email from [email protected] says your email address was changed, Meta says you may be able to undo the change with “secure my account” in that message.
2. Request a login link
On the login screen tap Forgot password?, enter your username, email address or phone number, complete the captcha, then choose your email or phone and tap Continue.
3. Request support if the link fails
Tap Can’t reset your password? below Send login link, then Send security code. If no code reaches you, tap I can’t access this email or phone number and give a secure email address only you can open.
4. Complete the identity check Meta emails you
For an account with photos of you, Meta asks for a video selfie turning your head. Without photos, it asks for the email or phone number you signed up with and the device type you used.
5. Cancel the deletion, then secure the account
Once in, confirm you want to keep the account, change the password, turn on two-factor authentication, check that the email and phone are yours, remove linked accounts you do not recognise in Accounts Center, and revoke apps you do not trust.
What Meta does not say
No Meta page we read says whether a hacked-account recovery stops a pending deletion on its own, whether the window pauses while Meta reviews a video selfie, or how long that review takes. Assume the clock keeps running and start the moment you notice.
Source: Instagram Help Center[1][2]Meta says the video selfie is never visible on Instagram, is deleted within 30 days, and can be resubmitted if the first did not confirm your identity. Start from a phone and network you have used before: Meta says its systems recognise your usual device and familiar locations (our inference, not a Meta rule).
Source: Instagram Help Center; MetaIf a Meta support form gives you a message box
Use it when someone else requested the deletion and Meta’s form lets you describe the case. Keep it factual and short.
My Instagram account @[username] was taken over on or around [date]. The person changed [the password / the email / the phone number] and requested that the account be deleted. I did not request the deletion. I am the owner. Account details: - Created around: [month, year] - Signed up with: [email or phone] - Device at sign-up: [iPhone / Android / other] - I usually log in from: [city, country] I would like to recover access and cancel the deletion before the deletion window closes. I can complete a video selfie. Please send the next steps to this secure email address that only I can open: [email]
Note to your followers and contacts, sent through another channel
Use it when someone else had your account. Send it from another account, by text or by email, never from the hacked account.
Heads up: my Instagram account @[username] was taken over on [date]. I am working to get it back through Instagram’s own recovery steps. Until I confirm it is back: - Ignore any message from that account asking for money, codes or personal details. - Do not click links it sends. - If someone offers to “recover” my account for a fee, it is not me and it is not Instagram. I will post here when it is safe again.
What is gone for good once the deletion is complete, and what you can rebuild
Meta says deleting a profile permanently removes the profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers, and that after the window you will not be able to retrieve your information. What survives is your email address, possibly your username, and anything you exported in time.

Removed for breaking the rules is different
Meta says that if a profile is removed for violating the Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up again with the same username. Meta disables accounts for policy reasons and deletes them on request: they are different routes, and a disabled account has its own review on screen.
Source: Instagram Help Center[1][2]Your old username was taken by someone else
Meta’s deletion page frames reuse as first come, first served: the username is yours again only if nobody new has taken it. Source: Instagram Help CenterNobody can restore a deleted account for a fee: how to spot the recovery scams
Meta says a deleted account cannot be restored and that it cannot delete a profile for you, so anyone selling either is not telling the truth. Deletion threats are also a phishing lure: Meta warns about messages that claim your account will be banned or deleted unless you follow their directions.

Paid help only makes sense while there is something left to recover
A completed deletion cannot be undone by Meta, so it cannot be undone by any service. Paid help fits 1 case: someone else took the account and requested the deletion, the window may still be open, and the free routes above have failed or the account matters too much to risk.
Source: Instagram Help Center, read 19 Oct 2026[1][2]Essentras Instagram recovery is a flat $6,500 and covers hacked, disabled, locked and 2FA-lockout cases, including a hacked account that is also disabled. FAQ
Deleted Instagram account questions, answered
Can you recover a deleted Instagram account after 30 days?▾
No. Meta says a profile and all its information are permanently deleted 30 days after the deletion request, that you will not be able to retrieve your information, and that a deleted account cannot be restored. Meta also says the number of days you can cancel varies by region, so act well before day 30.
How do I cancel my Instagram account deletion?▾
Log back in to the account before the window closes and confirm that you want to keep it. Instagram’s deletion page confirms the window but does not list the cancel steps. Meta documents the same move for Facebook (log in, then Cancel deletion) and Threads (log back in, then confirm), and its export page says a profile scheduled for deletion can be cancelled.
What is the difference between deactivating and deleting Instagram?▾
Deactivating hides your photos, comments and likes until you log back in, and Meta allows it only once a week. Deleting removes the profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers for good once the 30-day window ends. Both start in Accounts Center under Deactivation or deletion, on the same screen, so read the button before you tap.
Can I get my old Instagram username back after deleting my account?▾
Only if nobody else has taken it. Meta says you can sign up again with the same username, or add it to another profile, as long as a new person has not claimed it. If the profile was removed for breaking the Community Standards, Meta says you may not be able to use the same username again.
Someone deleted my Instagram account. What can I do?▾
Treat it as a hacked account. Meta says an account can be deleted by someone with your password. Use the security email Instagram sent, a login link, or a support request through instagram.com/hacked, complete the identity check, then cancel the deletion before the window closes. No Meta page says the clock pauses while Meta reviews your case.
Can I download my Instagram data after deleting my account?▾
Not after the deletion is complete: Meta says you lose access to the Export your information tool. While the deletion is pending, cancel it first, because Meta says a profile scheduled for deletion cannot be exported until you do. If you cannot log in at all, Meta points to its privacy rights request.
How long does Instagram take to delete an account?▾
Meta says the profile and its information are permanently deleted 30 days after the request, and that the whole deletion process can take up to 90 days after it begins. Copies may remain longer in backup storage that Meta uses for disaster recovery, but you cannot retrieve them.
Can Instagram support restore a deleted account for me?▾
No. Meta says there is no way to restore a deleted account, and for security reasons it cannot even delete a profile on your behalf. Meta has no general public phone number for customer service and says numbers claiming to be Meta support are potentially scams.
Can I create a new Instagram account with the same email?▾
Yes. Meta says you can create a new account with the email address you used before, though you may not get the same username. Meta also says an email address can be linked to up to 5 Instagram accounts.
Why can’t people find my Instagram profile anymore?▾
Several states hide a profile. Meta says deactivation hides your photos, comments and likes, content waiting for deletion is not accessible to other people, and a disabled account is no longer visible to others. Log in to find out which applies: a disabled account shows a message, and a deactivated account returns when you log back in.
