Verification guide

How to get verified on every platform: the 2026 map

Platforms verify in 3 ways: a paid subscription (Meta Verified, X Premium), a free request judged on authenticity and notability (TikTok, Snapchat, the free Instagram and Facebook badge), or an account check (YouTube at 100,000 subscribers, LinkedIn ID checks). The platform always decides, and Meta and TikTok say paid articles do not count as notability.

Each platform's own help and price pages, with the date we read them

What you will do

  • Find your platform's route, price and decision-maker in 1 table.
  • See which badges you can subscribe to and which you must qualify for.
  • Check the requirements each platform publishes, as they read on 19 Oct 2026.
  • Learn what counts as notability where it matters, and what never does.
  • Spot fake verification offers before you pay anyone.

3 kinds of badge

Subscription, notability or account check: the 3 kinds of badge

A badge means different things on different platforms. Knowing which kind you are applying for tells you what it costs, who decides and what you can do after a no.

Subscription badges

You pay the platform every month and pass an identity check: Meta Verified on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, and X’s paid tiers. The badge depends on the subscription: Meta says a paid badge ends with the billing cycle after you cancel.

Notability badges

Free, but you must be authentic and well known: the free Instagram and Facebook badge, TikTok and Snap Star. The platform weighs independent coverage and public interest, and paid articles do not help.

Account checks

A threshold or an identity or ownership check: YouTube at 100,000 subscribers, LinkedIn’s ID and workplace checks, Google Business Profile ownership. No fee is mentioned and no notability test applies.

What each platform says its badge means

The platforms’ own descriptions, read 19 Oct 2026 (Instagram: 14 Oct 2026). Paraphrased unless quoted.
PlatformWhat the platform says the badge meansWhat it says the badge is not
InstagramInstagram confirmed it is the authentic presence of the person or brandA symbol of importance, authority or expertise, or an endorsement
FacebookFacebook confirmed it is the authentic presence of that person or brandProof of fame: some badges come from a Meta Verified subscription
TikTokTikTok "has confirmed that the account really belongs to the person or brand it represents"An endorsement of everything the account posts
YouTubeThe official channel of a creator, artist, company or public figure"They also don’t represent awards, milestones, or endorsement from YouTube."
LinkedIn (Pages)LinkedIn confirmed, on objective criteria, that the Page represents the official organizationProof that all content on the Page is accurate, or an endorsement
Snapchat (Snap Star)The account is run by the real person or an authorized team, and Snap confirmed their identity and public presenceA right: "No one is entitled to a Snap Star"
Snapchat+ starA paid subscriber who chose to show the badgeIdentity verification, authenticity or endorsement by Snap

Meta

Instagram, Facebook and Threads: Meta’s routes to the badge

Meta runs 3 routes across its apps: the paid Meta Verified subscription, a free badge for notable people and brands, and, on Facebook, a free grey badge based on activity. Meta One, a newer subscription, also offers a badge option after identity verification.

Meta’s US dollar list prices on meta.com and Meta for Business, read 19 Oct 2026. Meta says plans and pricing may vary by region and app; the app shows your price before you pay.
PlanCreators (per profile, per month)Businesses (per Page, account or WhatsApp number, per month)
Standard$14.99 in the app; less on the web$14.99
Plus$49.99$49.99
Premium$149.99$149.99
Max$499.99$499.99

Instagram

Meta Verified

For personal and creator profiles: be 18 or older, match your profile name to a government photo ID and turn on Advanced Protection. Review takes up to 3 business days.

The free badge

For public figures, celebrities and brands that are authentic, unique, complete and notable. Meta reviews multiple news sources, does not count paid or sponsored media, and answers within 30 days.

Business accounts

Business profiles use Meta Verified for businesses, from the business prices above, or the free route if the brand is notable.

Facebook

The blue badge, free

"Represent a well-known, often searched person, brand or entity." Meta reviews Pages and profiles featured in multiple news sources, and says "we don't consider paid or promotional content as sources for review".

The grey badge, free

"Facebook Verified" shows a profile was verified from its activity on Facebook and other information provided. No notability or subscription is needed.

Meta Verified, paid

"Meta Verified is a paid subscription that also involves verification," with the badge among its benefits.

Threads

"Your Instagram username and verification will carry over, with the option to customize your profile specifically for Threads," Meta said when Threads launched (5 Jul 2023, updated 14 Aug 2024). Get verified on Instagram and the badge follows you to Threads.

Every Meta plan, what the badge costs over a year, and the free route step by step: Meta Verified cost

WhatsApp

WhatsApp: a business badge and a channel badge

On WhatsApp the badge for businesses comes from Meta, through 2 routes, and channels carry their own verified badge.

WhatsApp Business app

Subscribe to Meta Verified for business, from $14.99 a month per WhatsApp number, or a Meta One plan that includes the verified badge (Meta One sits in the app’s Tools tab).

WhatsApp Business Platform

Request Official Business Account status after 30 days on the Platform, with Business Verification, two-step verification and an approved display name. Meta’s developer documentation describes "a blue checkmark".

Channels

Meta Verified for business plans include 1 to 10 verified channels, depending on the plan, and Meta says the badge shows on the business profile, chat header and channel.

Both business routes step by step, with the rules Meta publishes today: How to get the green tick on WhatsApp Business

Creator platforms

TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat: free badges with different bars

All 3 badges are free. TikTok and Snapchat judge notability, YouTube sets a subscriber threshold, and TikTok and Snap say plainly that no one can sell you their badge.

TikTok

  • Active: the account is in use, with a recent login and at least 1 public post.
  • Authentic: a real person, business or organization, with a name, profile, content and documents that match.
  • Complete: public, with a profile photo, account name, bio and at least 1 public post.
  • Notable: TikTok may review independent media coverage and other reliable public information.
  • Secure: a verified phone number and email address, with two-step verification on.
  • Coverage that helps comes from an independent, recognized outlet, is mainly about you, is dated and is not sponsored, paid or promotional. Press releases, personal blogs and social posts do not count; submit direct links to the original articles.
  • Apply in the app: Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Account, Verification. Pick personal, business or institution verification; the wrong type can delay review.
  • Not approved? You can apply again once eligible. Changing your username or account type, or handing the account to someone else, removes the badge.

How to get verified on TikTok

YouTube

  • 100,000 subscribers. Below that, the Verified badge tab does not appear in YouTube Studio.
  • 2-step verification on the Google account, and a complete channel: banner, profile picture, description and at least 1 public video.
  • Apply in YouTube Studio on a computer: Settings, Channel, Verified badge, Apply. Only channel owners or managers can apply.
  • YouTube checks the channel is authentic and complete, and may ask for more information or documents.
  • Changing the channel name removes the badge; changing the handle does not.
  • YouTube may verify channels under 100,000 subscribers that are well known outside YouTube, on its own initiative.

Snapchat

  • Apply with Snap’s Snap Star form. It is for creators and public figures; general interest accounts are not eligible.
  • Snap weighs account engagement, regular stories for a public audience, authenticity, notability and cultural relevance, and content quality.
  • "No one is entitled to a Snap Star, regardless of the size of the account's audience."
  • "Snap does not charge fees or accept money for verification. No entity does so on Snap's behalf."
  • The black Snapchat+ star only marks a paid subscriber. Snap says such badges do not indicate identity verification.

X

X: a checkmark tied to a paid subscription

X sells its checkmark as part of paid plans. Its Purchaser Terms (effective 1 Aug 2025) describe X Premium tiers, where "Some features may require an account to be verified and have a checkmark displayed publicly", and Premium Business and Premium Organizations, where an affiliated account "will receive a checkmark and an affiliate badge".

  • Price: "The price of an X Premium subscription is set by X", and X shows it when you sign up, in the app or on the web.
  • Organizations: Premium Business and Premium Organizations are meant for businesses and organizations, not individuals, and are bought on the web.
  • Affiliates: an organization can mark its people or brands as affiliates; when an affiliation is removed, X removes the checkmark and affiliate badge immediately.
  • Refunds: for Premium Business and Premium Organizations, X’s terms say plans are prepaid and non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise; consumers in the EU and UK have 14 days to withdraw.

X’s Help Center showed our reader a browser check on 19 Oct 2026, so we could not confirm its current checkmark rules, tier names or prices there. Check help.x.com before you subscribe.

LinkedIn and Google

LinkedIn and Google Business Profile: identity and ownership checks

Neither asks about fame. LinkedIn checks who you are and where you work; Google checks that you really run the business on your profile.

LinkedIn members

  • Identity: through CLEAR in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, with a valid government ID and a personal phone number from those countries; through Persona with a valid NFC-enabled passport; or with DigiLocker credentials.
  • Workplace: a work email, Microsoft Entra Verified ID, a company LinkedIn Learning license or a LinkedIn Recruiter license, where the company is eligible.
  • "Verifications and adding a verification to your profile is available with no additional cost." The name you verify must match the name on your profile.
  • LinkedIn says the information used for verification, such as the details on your ID, is not visible to anyone.

LinkedIn Pages

  • Eligible Pages see the option to request verification in Settings on desktop. Eligibility may come from engagement, such as posting regularly, or from a commercial relationship with LinkedIn.
  • "Premium Company Page subscriptions, or Pages with paid products, such as Jobs or Ads, are automatically eligible for verification." Free trials of Premium Company Page are not.
  • LinkedIn checks data such as location and website URL, that the Page is claimed and policy compliance. It says the process can take up to 10 days, because it receives a high volume of requests.
  • Once a Page is verified, its employees can verify their workplace.

Google Business Profile

  • Google describes verification as gaining ownership of your Business Profile, so you can edit your business information and reply to customers.
  • Google picks the methods you can use: phone or text, email, a live video call, a video recording or a postcard. You cannot change them.
  • Reviews take up to 5 business days. Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30.
  • "Google will never ask for your verification code." Do not share it, even with people who manage your profile.
  • Verifying your website in Search Console can verify a profile instantly in some cases.

Notability

What counts as notability, platform by platform

Where a platform judges notability, it looks for independent coverage and public interest. Here is what each says it reviews and what it excludes.

The platforms’ own pages, read 19 Oct 2026 (Instagram: 15 Oct 2026).
PlatformWhat it reviewsWhat it excludes
Instagram and Facebook (free badge)Multiple news sources; a well-known, often searched person, brand or entityPaid or promotional content (Facebook); paid or sponsored media (Instagram)
TikTokIndependent media coverage and other reliable public information, as direct links to the original articlesSponsored, paid or promotional coverage; press releases, personal blogs and social posts; search results and screenshots
Snapchat (Snap Star)Whether the account is highly searched for or culturally relevant, with a large and engaged audienceNo coverage type is named; general interest accounts are not eligible
YouTubeNo notability test: 100,000 subscribers, or proactive verification of channels well known outside YouTubeNot applicable
X, LinkedIn and Google Business ProfileNo notability test: a subscription, an identity check or an ownership checkNot applicable

Our own products do not count either

Essentras sells media placements. A paid placement is paid media, so it never counts toward a platform’s notability test, and we never sell placements as a route to a badge.

Fake offers

Fake verification offers: what the platforms say

Badge scams copy the look of official help. The platforms’ own words are the best filter.

TikTok

"We'll never DM or email you asking you to apply for a badge." On anyone selling verification: "they're not with us."

Snapchat

No entity charges for verification on Snap’s behalf, and "no third-party entities influence Snap's decisions about Snap Star eligibility."

Instagram

Trying to verify through a third party is a listed reason Instagram can remove a badge or disable an account (Instagram Help Center, read 15 Oct 2026).

Google

"Google will never ask for your verification code." Anyone who asks for it is not Google.

Fake badges

TikTok says a "verified" badge placed in a bio, not next to the username, is not real: only the platform applies badges, always in the same place.

Promised approval

Every platform on this page decides for itself. Help can prepare an application; nobody outside the platform can grant the badge.

Before you pay anyone

  • Is the badge free on this platform? TikTok, Snapchat and LinkedIn member verification are, and YouTube mentions no fee.
  • Do they want your password, a verification code or your ID? Never hand those to a third party.
  • Do they promise approval? Every platform here decides for itself.
  • Do they sell paid articles as notability evidence? Meta and TikTok exclude paid coverage.
  • Will you apply from your own account, through the platform’s own route? If not, walk away.

Optional help

Optional help, and cheaper starts

Most badges on this page need no outside help: the steps above are the platforms’ own. For Instagram, Essentras offers application help for $1,200: an eligibility review, fixes to your profile and name, guidance through Meta’s official application and recovery after a rejection. You apply from your own account, Meta decides, and Meta’s subscription, if you choose that route, is paid to Meta. See the Instagram verification service.

Optional. You can follow every step on this page without buying anything.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you get verified on social media for free?▾

Yes on most platforms: TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn member verification and YouTube’s badge cost nothing to request, and Instagram and Facebook have a free badge for notable people and brands. Meta Verified and X’s checkmark come with paid subscriptions.

How much does it cost to get verified?▾

Meta Verified starts at $14.99 a month per profile in the app, with plans up to $499.99; businesses pay from $14.99 a month per Page, account or WhatsApp number. X sets its own prices at sign-up. TikTok, Snapchat and LinkedIn member verification are free (prices read 19 Oct 2026).

How many followers do you need to get verified?▾

Only YouTube sets a number: 100,000 subscribers to apply. TikTok says follower count and likes alone do not determine eligibility, and Snap says no one is entitled to a Snap Star whatever the audience size. Meta’s free badge depends on notability, not followers.

Does a verified badge mean the platform endorses you?▾

No. YouTube says verification does not represent an endorsement, TikTok says a badge does not mean it endorses everything you post, and LinkedIn says Page verification implies no endorsement. Instagram says the badge is not a symbol of importance.

Can someone get me verified for a fee?▾

No one outside the platform can grant a badge. TikTok says anyone claiming to sell its verification is "not with us", Snap says no entity charges on its behalf, and Instagram lists trying to verify through a third party as a reason to remove a badge.

Do paid articles help me get verified?▾

No. Meta does not count paid or promotional content as notability sources, and TikTok excludes sponsored, paid or promotional coverage and press releases. Independent coverage that journalists chose to write is what counts.

If I am verified on Instagram, am I verified on Facebook and Threads?▾

Threads carries over your Instagram verification, as Meta said at launch. Facebook is separate: Meta says verifying on Instagram does not verify you on Facebook, though 1 Meta Verified subscription can cover 1 Instagram and 1 Facebook profile in the same Meta account.

What happens to my badge if I change my name or username?▾

YouTube removes the badge when the channel name changes, but not the handle. TikTok removes it when you change your username or account type. On Meta Verified, changing your username may need re-verification.

Is Google Business Profile verification a verified badge?▾

Not in the social media sense. Google describes it as gaining ownership of your Business Profile so you can manage it, and reviews take up to 5 business days.
